US composer and pianist Bob James has had an extremely varied career, full of fascinating twists and turns. The 85-year-old is sometimes referred to as a hip-hop icon because samples of his music have played an important role in the history of rap. Others regard him as the godfather of smooth jazz.

Discovered by Quincy Jones in the '60s, the two-time Grammy Award winner made a name for himself in the '70s with his innovative sound on producer Creed Taylor's CTI label. He fused jazz with classical and funk music. James's music found a wider audience in 1978 when his track “Angela” was used as the theme tune for the popular US sitcom Taxi.

James, who co-founded the popular smooth jazz group Fourplay, will demonstrate why he is known as the "Godfather of Smooth Jazz" when he performs with his quartet at Moods. Expect smooth, soulful and groovy music — in other words, expect excellence.
