Knobil is a vocal jazz quartet founded by Louise Knobil, a double bass player, singer and composer living in Lausanne. Inspired by Esperanza Spalding, Charles Mingus and Oscar Pettiford, she interprets her own compositions with her double bass and voice in a style between singer-songwriter, post-bop and glitery jazz.

Born in 1981 as the daughter of a writer and a director in the Albanian capital Tirana, Elina Duni first appeared on stage at the age of just five. A lot has happened since her first musical steps on radio and television: today, Elina Duni is an ECM artist and, since 2017, a laureate of the Swiss Music Prize. In this ZKB Jazz Prize Special, the oud virtuoso Rabih Abou-Khalil meets the Elina Duni Trio with Marc Méan and Matthieu Michel. A unique constellation that will probably bring some golden moments. It is both a personal and political message exploring black and female liberation and love gained and love lost.&quot;

Boubacar Traoré

In the early years of Mali&#x27;s independence, 20-year-old Boubacar Traoré picked up an electric guitar and shaped the sound of the young state. But with the military coup in 1968, his songs were banned from the radio and Traoré had to support his family as a farmer and small trader. In the late 1980s, however, his comeback was abruptly interrupted once again by the death of his wife. Traoré went to Paris and made a living as a construction worker. Finally, in 1990, he re-emerged as a musician and recorded six albums in short intervals. Very soon, Vincent Bucher&#x27;s harmonica became the sonic alter ego of Traoré&#x27;s voice and guitar playing. Since the turn of the millennium at the latest, he has been celebrated as one of the great fathers and ambassadors of modern Mandingo music, combining characteristic playing techniques and ideas from West Africa with the philosophy of the blues from the southern United States.

This Masterclass was originally announced for October 13, 2023. Ida Nielsen&#x27;s life was turned upside down when she joined music legend Prince in 2010 and started touring with The New Power Generation and the 4-piece powerhouse rock band 3rdeyegirl. But it wouldn&#x27;t do justice to Ida Nielsen&#x27;s musicality to reduce it only to this time, because she has not only been playing in many different formations for years, but is also on the road with her own project. On her sixth solo album, More Sauce, Please! the songwriter and bandleader visibly influenced by her musical background combines funky beats, slap-bass virtuosity, lively rap and pop earworms. What fascinates the bass virtuoso about funk? How did she get her own signature instrument, a 4-string Sandberg California electric bass? This masterclass gives musicians and music enthusiasts alike the opportunity to ask Ida Nielsen all the questions that are burning on the tip of their tongue. The voice of the young Swiss singer and composer Cinzia Catania is unique - crystal clear and yet warm and soft. Light as a feather and with rhythmic precision she sings Bossa Nova and Swing. Due to her versatility and vocal flexibility, she is active in numerous national and international projects of different styles: from jazz, Latin, world, pop and electronic music to Swiss folk music. Cinzia studied jazz composition in Lucerne with Ed Partyka and has established herself as one of the most interesting composers of music for jazz orchestras of her generation.

Moods members are guaranteed admission to every event until 30 minutes before the concert starts. Only shows with a high demand require a reservation. The corresponding concerts are marked on the website with "Member-Reservation".

Everyone should have the opportunity to participate in the events at Moods.

Asmâa Hamzaoui & Bnat Timbouktou

Asmâa Hamzaoui and Bnat Timbouktou (the daughters of Timbuktu) represent a new generation of young women Gnawa performers, breaking new ground in a traditionally patriarchal realm. Asmâa Hamzaoui assimilated the Gnawa musical tradition from a young age through her father, renowned musician Rachid Hamzaoui, learning to play the guembri (three-string lute) from an early age and later accompanying him at celebrations. She formed Bnat Timbuktu in 2012, gradually winning over audiences, until their breakthrough invitation to the Gnaoua Festival of Essaouira in 2017. Their taboo-busting performance, and jamming with Fatoumata Diawara, won them invitations to major festivals in Europe and the USA, even without a recording to their name. Asmâa still comes up against opposition from some Gnawa traditionalists but as she says: “They can talk, but here I am working and they’re just talking.”

Julian Lage Trio

The jazz guitarist Julian Lage is an exceptional talent: as an eight-year-old he already started playing with musicians such as Carlos Santana, Pat Metheny, Kenny Werner, Toots Thielemans, Gary Burton and many more. His uncramped, easy-going and readily accessible jazz understanding generated much attention for his works and he was rewarded with Grammy nominations. Although recognised as a virtuoso, Lage&#x27;s ability is never presented as a show of his spectacular technique. More important to him is the emotional content of his music. An exceptional talent indeed. For the evening he will be accompanied by bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Kenney Wollesen. Together they will further develop a blend of Jazz-Fusion, Blues and Rock’n’Roll. Judith Hill

Judith Hill has already worked together with world stars such as Robbie Williams, Stevie Wonder and Elton John and became famous overnight when she sang «Heal The World» at the funeral of Michael Jackson – over 2 billion people watched on television. She appeared in the Oscar-winning documentary film «20 Feet From Stardom», generated a storm of enthusiasm in The Voice in the USA and the Rolling Stone Magazine praised her for her «outstanding powerhouse vocals». Her debut album «Back in Time» (2015) was produced by no-one less than Prince. Following a sensational show in Moods in 2019 to present her second album, «Golden Child», she now returns and brings along a new work: «Baby, I&#x27;m Hollywood!». We look forward to crisp, groovy Funk, Soul, R&#x27;n&#x27;B, to Jazzy ballads, to Judith&#x27;s impressive, distinctive voice and her great piano and guitar playing. Jaimie Branch has already contributed to a broad palette of projects, not only in Jazz, but also in Punk, Noise, Indie-Rock and Hip-Hop. Rather less well known, yet equally enchanting, is her work as composer and producer. These can first be discovered on her debut album «Fly or Die»: a 35-minute ride through all sorts of musical genres that knows no boundaries - always held together by the spooky sounds that she extracts from her trumpet.

Mark Guiliana's Beat Music

The magazine JazzTimes raves “One of the most influential drummers of his generation”. The talk is about Mark Guiliana who is known in particular for his rhythmic finesse, his imaginative playing and unmistakable sound. Spring 2019 sees the release of a new album with his band Beat Music, on which the drummer fuses the power of jazz improvisation with the discipline of electronic music. Hard grooves without compromise are overlayered with atmospheric sounds, raw effects and spoken texts.

Stiller Has

Every Easter Moods welcomes Stiller Has to Moods. Such wonderful traditions must be preserved, therefore the band again brings to the stage their album «Endosaurusrex», released in 2017. Inspired by fairy tales in the style of Brothers Grimm, Endo Anaconda holds a distortion mirror up to the community. In his bitter-sweet dialect verses, Hans has depression in happiness, Bambi is into sadomaso, and even the devil has to go for therapy. The Wishing Table makes him sick and the land of plenty comes only with a gastric band. And along the way, Endo dissects our small world, on the search for the last paradise «where it&#x27;s not so uptight as here».

Kala Jula – Samba Diabaté & Vincent Zanetti

Kala Jula brings together Samba Diabaté, one of Bamako&#x27;s most popular guitarists, with multi-instrumentalist and Djembe master, Vincent Zanetti. The Swiss-Mali duo newly interprets the music of the Mandingo tradition through blending of West African sounds with blues and jazz. In their current project, «Mande Kulu», the two musicians collaborate with violinist Jacky Molar and bassist Hélène Labarrière from France. Together, the four take the audience on a musical journey through the Nomadic culture of African countries. Supported by SüdKulturFonds

Mohamed Abozekry «Karkade»

He juggles with the traditional musical styles of his North African homeland, the creativity of jazz with the power of rock music: the Egyptian Oud player, Mohamed Abozekry, who these days lives in France. The traditional Arabesque sounds of the Oriental lute meet up with Flamenco and South American influences. Abozekry learnt to play the Oud from an early age with the famous Naseer Shamma in his «House of the Arabian Lute» in Cairo. At 15, he was already the youngest teacher of the instrument in the Arabic world. «Karkadé» is the name of his newest project. Supported by SüdKulturFonds

Chris Wiesendanger Solo

In the music of Chris Wiesendanger, concentration and presence are at the center. Polyphonic and polyrhythmic music unfolds from this still center. Multi-layered sound fabrics and superimposition of movement sequences stand in contrast to emptiness and open space. The music spreads out, creates resonance, brings about change, and returns to silence. His solo concerts are deeply rooted in the jazz piano and blues traditions, but he is also intimately familiar with the literature of classical and new music. He explores traditional playing techniques as well as new ways of creating sound inside the piano. He also works on extensions, overdubs and changes to the acoustic piano sound through electronics.

Liniker E Os Caramelows

Liniker e os Caramelows are a celebration of life, colourful and open. With her charismatic performance, her distinctive soul voice and her humorous play with identities, Liniker, the Afro-Brasilian transgender songstress has within a few years ascended to become an icon of Brasilian contra-culture. Together with her band, OS Caramelows, she is without doubt one of the most exciting musical acts that Sao Paolo, the metropole of millions, currently has to offer. They blend Brasilian Soul with the heritage of Musica Popular Brasileira. The result is a definitely more intensive, danceable sound, sometimes sensitive, other times energetic. The rhythmical diversity ranges from powerful horns, rock elements and flute funk. Aly Keita Trio

The swirling Balafon playing of Aly Keita is a spectacle, the sticks seem to dance over the keys. Born into a musical family, since childhood Aly Keita has built and played his own instruments and has played as sideman with the best: Omar Sosa, Joe Zawinul, Rhoda Scott, Paco Séry, Karim Ziad, Pharoah Sanders, Paolo Fresu and many more. Today Aly Keita lives in Berlin, where he became acquainted with the Dutch drummer Marcel van Cleef and the Italian bassist Roberto Badoglio. In their music they wander between spectacular African rhythms, polyphony and elements of jazz, and blend these into a wonderful and unique sound.

«La Scintilla Nell’Ombra» – «The spark in the shadow» – is the name of the brand-new program, whereby the two exceptional musicians Andreas Schaerer and Luciano Biondini meet up for the first time in an intimate duo constellation. Their musical encounter cheerfully moves between virtuosity, fiery dialogue and down-tempo poetry. During the evening they will combine own compositions with a selection of their favourite songs and Canzoni, which develop their very own emotional power with this line-up

Lea Lu

Back to the essence. Back to the voice. That was the starting point of their album «Rabbit» that was released in 2017. That opened up a new path for Lea Lu, away from the usual pop structures and on to totally improvised song tapestries. Lea has put together a line-up of musicians - that are equally at home with pop as they are with jazz - especially for Moods. Moments of energy-loaded freedom are developed from meditative reduction and pop borrowings.

Her enthusiastically experimental approach is occasionally angry, often riotous, frenetic and uninhibited. Her first concert in Moods (2020) was a wild ride through all possible music genres and was so impressive that a live album was created from it.

Brandy Butler sings Billy Strayhorn

Following the successful last season&#x27;s joint ZJO/Brandy Butler concert, the songstress has been invited for a second project. Billy Strayhorn was 24 years old when he joined Duke Ellington and remained loyal for the entire duration of his short life. He was to a large part also responsible for the sound of the orchestra and was considered as one of the most prominent jazz composers and arrangers. The adjective «meaningful» without doubt also applies to his song texts, the majority of which he penned himself. In contrast to many not-so-deep jazz standard lyrics, Strayhorn&#x27;s texts are intelligent, witty and often unconventional. So, for example, the track «Take the A-Train» is route information to Ellington&#x27;s house wrapped up in a melody, which Duke explained to Strayhorn by telephone for their first encounter: «You must take the ‹A› train, to go to Sugar Hill way up in Harlem». Brandy Butler describes Strayhorn as one of her favourite composers and writers and during the evening will sing tracks like «Passion Flower» and «Satin Doll» in addition to «Take the A-Train». She grew up in America, studied music in Philadelphia Musik and in 2003 came to Switzerland as an au-pair. Soon she was singing with the greats such as Sophie Hunger, Florian Ast and the rapper Steff la Cheffe. She can also evidence a notable solo career with bands such as «Chamber Soul» or her current project «Brandy Butler and the Brokenhearted».

Yemen Blues

Yemen Blues stands for the modern, cosmopolitan Israel and shows that there is an enriching exchange between diverse cultures away from the narrow-minded politics. The charismatic singer Ravid Kahalani is of Yemeni origin and has teamed up with top-class musicians with roots from all over the world. The ensemble plays a captivating blend of Funk, Blues, Rock, Soul and traditional Oriental music, which impresses every audience.

Die langjährige und sehr fruchtbare Partnerschaft zwischen Thomas Gansch und dem Zurich Jazz Orchestra wird auch dieses Jahr fortgesetzt. Neben Repertoire aus der Vergangenheit wird es auch neue Arrangements geben, die von Ed Partyka speziell für dieses Konzert geschrieben wurden und die Thomas Gansch als Komponisten und Multi-Instrumental-Solisten, aber auch als liebenswürdiges ‹Enfant terrible› präsentieren. Sicher ist, dass die wunderbaren Musiker*innen des ZJO für einige musikalische Überraschungen sorgen werden. Sicher ist auch: Band und Publikum werden einen unvergesslichen Abend erleben.

Ein Jahr nachdem ihr fünftes Studioalbum Album «Longing Fever» den ‹Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award› abgeräumt hat, ist Evelinn Trouble mit ihrer Band wieder auf Tour. Evelinn Trouble, bekannt für ihre kreative Rastlosigkeit, ihre virtuose Stimme und ihr eigenwilliges Songwriting hat ihrer Diskografie mit «Longing Fever» ein aufregendes Pop-Werk hinzugefügt – ein Bruch mit ihrer Psychedelic-Ära und trotzdem unverkennbar Trouble. Ein spannendes Album, das Höhen und Tiefen mit Inbrunst durchläuft und von beatlesken Liebesliedern zu euphorischen Melodien reicht, die von verzerrtem Hip-Hop getragen werden. Unerwartet gesellen sich neu Klänge von Streichinstrumenten zum sonst dunklen Klanguniversum der Zürcher Sängerin: Ein Streichtrio erweitert die Band zum «Evelinn Trouble Orchestra».

Yarima Blanco ist eine herausragende Tres-Cubano-Spielerin und eine der wenigen ausserhalb Kubas, die dieses einzigartige dreisaitige Instrument beherrschen. Mit ihrem eigenen Septett Son Latino verbindet sie verschiedene kubanische Stile mit lateinamerikanischen Einflüssen. Ihre mitreissenden Auftritte zeigen nicht nur ihre beeindruckende Technik auf der Tres, sondern auch ihre starke Stimme und ihr Charisma. Blanco perfektionierte ihr Können während eines mehrjährigen Studiums in Kuba und avancierte schnell zu einer gefragten Künstlerin, die auch mit dem Orchester ANACAONA in der internationalen Jazzszene für Aufsehen sorgte. Pancho Amat, internationaler Meister des Tres Cubanos, beschreibt Blancos Talent als aussergewöhnlich. Vor und nach dem Konzert lädt DJ Saltho zum tanzen ein.

Moods Summer Special

Letztes Jahr feierte das Orchestra Baobab, eine der grössten Bands Afrikas, ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen. Ihre Geschichte beginnt im Herzen der Medina von Dakar im Senegal der späten 1960er Jahren und erstreckt sich über die ganze Welt und bis ins 21. Jahrhundert. Die Gruppe aus Sängern und Musikern vom ganzen Kontinent spielen eine Mischung aus afro-und lateinamerikanischen Stilen, internationalem Pop und traditioneller Griot-Musik. Nach dem ausverkauften Konzert vom letzten Jahr kehrt die Band diesen August zurück ins Moods. Vor und nach dem Konzert werden die beiden DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim auflegen.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Efrat Alony

Efrat Alony und Ed Partyka arbeiten schon bald 20 Jahre lang zusammen und haben Aufnahmen mit dem Sunday Night Orchestra und dem Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestra gemacht. Darüber hinaus sind sie gemeinsam mit dem UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra und der HR Big Band aufgetreten. Die Sängerin, Bandleaderin und Komponistin, die heute in Deutschland lebt, begann ihr Musikstudium in Haifa und schloss es in Boston ab. Genauso international ist das Programm des Abends. Es besteht aus modernen jüdischen Volksliedern und Originalkompositionen von Efrat Alony, die von Ed Partyka für Jazzorchester und die warme, bald sanft-melancholische, bald dezidierte Stimme Efrat Alonys arrangiert wurden.

Luedji Luna

Die Sängerin und Songwriterin Luedji Luna ist ein prominenter Name in der brasilianischen Musikszene. Mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet und 2022 für den Latin Grammy «Best MPB Album» nominiert, erreichte sie bald auch Bekanntheit weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus. In ihrer Musik untersucht und zelebriert sie die Verbindungen zwischen ihrem Heimatland und ihren afrikanischen Wurzeln und thematisiert die Marginalisierungen von Afrobrasilianer*innen und Frauen in Brasilien. Diese Thematik gepaart mit ihrer souligen Stimme trägt eine mitreissende Energie in sich, die schon in ihren Alben oder online beim NPR Tiny Desk Concert spürbar wird, sich aber vor allem live zu einem unvergesslichen Musikerlebnis entfaltet. DJ Sampa wird anschliessend die besten Tracks aus Forró, Samba-Rock, Gafieira und Tropicalia auflegen. Diese Veranstaltung findet in Zusammenarbeit mit Adalu statt: https://www.adalu.ch/

Marie Krüttli Trio

Das Marie Krüttli Trio beeindruckt, ist aufregend, bunt und gewagt. Mit reifem Ton, eindeutiger Ästhetik und betörender Virtuosität manövriert die Welschschweizerin sich und Ihre Bandkollegen durch vertrackte Rhythmusgebilde und verwobene Akkordketten. Groovig schillern die Melodien, charmant und mit viel hintergründigem Witz erscheinen die Akteure, stets tief in der europäischen Klaviertradition verankert und von den Klangidealen eines Strawinsky und Debussy beeinflusst sind.

James Brandon Lewis

«Ein Saxophonist, der die Tradition verkörpert und über sie hinausgeht», schrieb die New York Times über James Brandon Lewis. In nur etwas mehr als einem Jahrzehnt ist er zu einem der gefeiertsten Jazzmusikern geworden. Ein Künstler, der sich mit seiner einzigartigen Mischung aus Gospel, Blues, R&amp;B und den aufrüttelnden Saxophon-Erkundungen von John Coltrane, Albert Ayler und Sonny Rollins eine Nische geschaffen hat. Sein Auftritt fällt mit der Veröffentlichung seiner neuen ANTI Records-Aufnahme «Eye and I» zusammen, auf der er im Trio mit dem E-Bassisten Josh Werner und dem Schlagzeuger Chad Taylor zu hören ist.

Carebender ist ein achtköpfiges Berliner Vokalensemble, das sich der experimentellen Musik annimmt und mittels gesanglichen Kompositionen ein wagemutiges Spiel mit Schönheit und abstrakter Kunstform betreibt. Ihr erstes Album «What We Talk About» erschien im März 2022 bei BlauBlauRecords und wird als Acappella-Moment gegen die Wut beschrieben, die Wut die im Magen lauert und immer im falschen Moment ausbricht. Im Moods präsentieren Carebender diese Songs zum ersten Mal einem Live-Publikum.

Arthur Donnot is an up-and-coming musician from Lausanne whose calm breath on the saxophone unfolds a warm sound all its own, almost reminiscent of organic singing. OKWOK

OKWOK mixes inspirations from traditional and modern jazz with hip-hop, demonstrating the musical and cultural diversity of today&#x27;s jazz. The trio of three young Swiss musicians, all graduates of the Bern Jazz Academy, was born out of a jam among friends and has grown into an active band that is constantly evolving. With different cultural influences and a lively and bold message, Alina Amuri manages to create magical musical moments. Born in DR Congo Kinshasa and raised in Switzerland, the singer and multi-instrumentalist has developed her own homemade style between Afro, Neo Soul and Trip Hop in the last ten years. An unforgettable voice meets Congolese percussion joy and surprising flute interludes, releasing forces where optimism returns and dancing becomes inevitable. A sound that creates a new sense of togetherness and the promise that everything will be alright. Alina Amuri&#x27;s music combines influences from Lauryn Hill, Nina Simone and Alicia Keys with a fresh, lively twist. Alina has already been selected for SRF 3 Best Talent, has been nominated for the most important Swiss music award (Swiss Music Awards) and won the Swiss Live Talent Award with her last album (Chasing Traces). At this concert Alina Amuri will present her next studio album Back To You. It is the most personal record so far and tells about her journey back to her birthplace Kinshasa, back to her family roots.

The duo performance is an invitation to access emotional universes of joy through music, dance and poetry It is about immersion in life and being open to mood changes through a loving pact with the dynamics and impermanence of life. Flaira Ferro mixes organic traditional elements with modern rock, funk and pop, in a hybrid language, tropical and interactive. The instrumentation consists of accordion, flutes, synthesizers, drum machines and percussion that make direct references to rhythms of Brazilian popular culture such as frevo, capoeira, forró, caboclinho and maracatu. Adalu, Tropical Gold &amp; Flaira Ferro invite you to the launch event of their NGO Adalu Tropical in Brazil, founded in February 2023. The NGO&#x27;s goal is to build art and educational spaces for people in social need in Bahia and Pernambuco.

Ayom

Ayom are musical sailors who cross the black Atlantic from Brazil to Angola and Cape Verde with a distinctly Mediterranean identity. Their sound is a blend of Brazilian, Afro-Latin and Afro-Lusitanian sounds played with irresistible verve, as if the tropical sun were piercing dark clouds. The name Ayom refers to the Lord of Music who exists in Afro-Brazilian mithology (Candomblè) in Tambor and taught people how to make music and sing. The multicultural band consists of six members from Brazil, Angola, Italy and Greece, with the Brazilian singer and percussionist Jabu Morales at the center.

Last year, Orchestra Baobab, one of Africa&#x27;s greatest bands, celebrated its 50th anniversary. Its story begins in the heart of Dakar&#x27;s medina in Senegal in the late 1960s and stretches around the world and into the 21st century. The group of singers and musicians from all over the continent play a mixture of Afro and Latin American styles, international pop and traditional griot music. After last year&#x27;s sold-out concert, the band returns to Moods this August. Before and after the concert, DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim will be spinning some tunes.

What have almost forgotten Japanese folk songs got to do with a cumbia beat? The answer is Minyo Crusaders! The ten-piece collective reworks traditional Japanese folk songs called Min&#x27;yō with Latin music such as cumbia, Ethiopian jazz, Thai pop, Afro-funk and reggae. The result sounds a little crazy, but is absolutely brilliant in a great way. Minyo Crusaders are the most infectious and hottest global beat party since Buena Vista Social Club. Anyway, the punchy and inventive arrangements breathe new life into the old Japanese min&#x27;yō, which are also traditional workers&#x27; songs.

The Zurich Kantonalbank encourages young, innovative Swiss bands with the ZKB Jazz Prize. The 15th edition of the ZKB Jazz Prize is a public six-day festival from 30th April to 5th May 2017 staged in Moods. For the finale on 5th May, the two jurors Elina Duni and Erik Truffaz will appear on stage with their musical collague Bugge Wesseltoft. In 2015 Raphael Loher and Urs Müller from Luzern and Nicolas Stocker from Zurich created the trio, Kali. Founded as a Working Band, they develop their own blend of contemporary classical, alternative rock and improvised music – as if Rage Against the Machine and Morton Feldman had a daughter. From wonderful minimalistic intermezzos to astonishingly catchy, dense and powerful compositions, they derive a broad, dynamic and stylistic range without ever losing their own sound.

The starting point for the current project«Social Science» by Terri Lyne Carrington was the desire to comment on critical issues within today&#x27;s community. The drummer, producer and Grammy Award winner and her sextet reflect on themes such as social justice, racial equality and gender topics, in order to translate these views into music. The result is contemporary Jazz, enriched with Spoken Word and elements of R’n’B, Indie Rock and Classical music.
