Adi's tips for January

The new year at Moods is starting, shall we say, on a varied note. Here are the concerts I'm particularly looking forward to.

Friday, January 2 - Los Dos Engros & Mr. Wempe

For 27 years, Han Sue Lee — the heart and soul of Los Dos — wandered through the Schiffbau as a night watchman, always enjoying a warm welcome at the Moods Bar. Although this era is now coming to an end, the New Year's tradition lives on: nine first-class musicians gather to set Han Sue Lee's jungle blues fantasies to music and get people dancing to welcome in the new year. The swamp blues is here. Boogie trash is a fact. Let's dance into 2026 and immerse ourselves in the spirit of Rio Grande!

Tuesday, January 6 - Erika Stucky's "Stucky Fingers"

'Sticky Fingers' is widely regarded as one of the Rolling Stones' finest albums. But that doesn't mean Erika Stucky can't improve upon it. With her unmistakable voice, humour, and poetic subversion, she transforms the album into 'Stucky Fingers': interweaving jazz interludes with cabaret charm and a hint of rock aesthetic to create a kaleidoscopic, cinematic stage set.

Saturday, January 24 - Big Zis

Big Zis has been a prominent figure in the Swiss music scene since the 1990s. She has collaborated with renowned artists such as Greis, Sophie Hunger and Madam, won numerous awards and consistently pushed the boundaries of her artistry. For The Big Hug Experience on 24 January at Moods, she has assembled a fantastic live band comprising Martina Berther (musical director and electric bass), Beatrice Graf (percussion), Valeria Zangger (drums) and Meret Siebenhaar (electronics and synthesiser). There will also be guest appearances by Fatima Moumouni, Jessica Jurassica, Taranja Wu and many more.

Sunday, January 25 - Chip Wickham

Chip Wickham crosses the border between club culture and jazz. His early collaborations include work with The Pharcyde, Nightmares on Wax and Matthew Halsall. He will be presenting his new record, The Eternal Now, at Moods. Its soothing, warm sound is just right for cold January days. Fans of Matthew Halsall, GoGo Penguin, Mammal Hands or Jasmine Myra are sure to enjoy it.

Friday, January 30 - Dub Spencer & Trance Hill

When it comes to versatility, Dub Spencer & Trance Hill are in a class of their own. The quartet draws inspiration from various genres, incorporating spaghetti western sound aesthetics and the guitar music of The Clash into their sound, as well as referencing ancient Rome and the drug-fuelled lyrics of beat writer William S. Burroughs. Drummer Julian Dillier delivers beats with the precision of a Swiss chronometer, while bassist Masi Stalder lays down vibrating low-pressure waves. Keyboard and effects virtuoso Philipp Greter fills the room with echoing spirals that entangle the mind, while Michael Bucher plays guitar riffs like laser beams over the crowd. Sound alchemist Umberto Echo then condenses all of this into a 360° mix that hits from all directions.Incidentally, Dub Spencer & Trance Hill's first appearance at Moods was at the ZKB Jazz Prize in 2005.
