Lola's tips for December

Hey y'all, things are getting punky, funky, and "saxy" in my picks for the holiday season. Read on to find out which concerts I'm particularly looking forward to.

Saturday, December 6 - Manou Gallo

This season, we've already hosted some of the most prominent female bassists, such as Nik West and Ida Nielsen, on the Moods stage. Manou Gallo, whom we call the Female Funk Force here in the office, is of course a must. Her blend of jazz, funk, groove, and Afrobeat has it all. Anyone who has experienced her music recognizes her uniqueness immediately. In her hands, the bass becomes a percussion instrument that drives the groove to fascinating heights. It's no wonder that Bootsy Collins calls her the "African Queen of Bass."

Thursday, December 11 - Patrick Sommer Sextett "Rhythmcreature"

Let's stick with the bass. I'm a fan of abstract creatures, and Patrick Sommer has created one. The bassist will unleash the "Rhythm Creature" with his sextet during his final carte blanche evening. The band, acting as a creature, is only marginally tamed and indulges its instincts with relish. It's crazy, groovy, and more than exciting.

Friday, December 12 - Fulu Miziki

My little punk heart beats faster here, even though it's not actually punk. Or is it? To me, punk means resistance, energetic music, and doing things yourself. That's exactly what Fulu Miziki is all about. The Kinshasa collective, whose name translates to "music made from garbage," uses its art to combat the overwhelming amount of trash. They do this in an extremely special way. They make instruments and costumes out of waste and create their own worlds. You definitely shouldn't miss this "eco-friendly" sound.

Saturday, December 13 - Nesrine

Nesrine inspired me with both her music and her story. The classically trained cellist built a career playing in several large orchestras. She later began experimenting and composing her own pieces, which marked the beginning of her solo career. I love it when people can successfully change the course of their lives and embark on a completely unique path. That's why I highly recommend her concert.

Sunday, December 14 - Muriel Grossmann Quartet

Disclaimer: I'm not usually a fan of the saxophone. However, I make an exception with Muriel Grossmann. She is a master of spiritual jazz and always manages to create a meditative atmosphere. She is also one of the few women who have found success in jazz. I love everything about her music.

Saturday, December 27 - Galliano

Since it's the Christmas season, I have an extra tip for you: Galliano. The band needs little introduction. Born in the underground clubs and warehouse parties of London in the late eighties, Galliano emerged from a culture encompassing music, dance, fashion, art, design, and literature. The acid jazz legends will bid a fitting farewell to the old year at Moods, showing that they have lost none of their edge with their new record.
