Marian's tips for November

November at Moods is going to be great! There will be a band that reminds me of a wonderful summer, the Godfather himself, and music to dance to. In my tips, I'll tell you what I'm particularly looking forward to.

Monday, November 3 - Bob James Quartet

The hype around Bob James in our office is real! Everyone is looking forward to seeing the "Godfather of Smooth Jazz", whose samples also played an important role in rap history. His music definitely triggers something in me. Perhaps it's because he wrote a soundtrack for a TV series once, but his music evokes cinematic images for me.

Friday, November 7 - Ludivine Issambourg feat. Brian Jackson

This highlight will probably divide opinions because not everyone likes the sound of the flute. For me, however, this show is a must. First, Issambourg is a virtuoso flutist, and even those who aren't flute aficionados will be thrilled. Secondly, it is because of her guest, Brian Jackson. The legendary pianist, flautist, and composer, who made music history with Gil Scott-Heron, will support Issambourg and her band at the Schiffbau.

Saturday, November 8 - W.I.T.C.H. (We Intend To Cause Havoc)

My mom always said that only a genius could oversee chaos. I may not be a genius, but I like chaos. This band is quasi-orderly chaos. W.I.T.C.H. throws the Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, and James Brown into a pot and cheerfully mixes them with traditional African rhythms and songs. Chaotic? Yes! Good? Yes! If you don't believe me, watch the band's last performance at Moods.

Friday, November 14 - Derya Yildirim & Grup Şimşek

I'm particularly looking forward to the performance by Derya Yildirim & Grup Şimşek. I associate them with the summer of 2019, when I had just moved to Winterthur and experienced my first MFW as a local. I particularly remember Derya's concert in the town square. I danced late into the night with friends and had a good time. That's what happened back then, and it will be the same at this concert.

Friday, November 21 - Pongo

When I think of Pongo, I picture my 18-year-old self sitting in front of the TV with a controller in hand. I've listened to Pongo's music for about 15 years, but for a long time, I didn't know who Pongo was. This is because Pongo was featured on the FIFA 10 soundtrack with Buraka Som Sistema and their hit song "Kalemba (Wegue-Wegue)." My friends and I would leave the loading screen on just so we could listen to the song. I think FIFA is stupid now, but my love for Pongo and her music continues.
