Ami Yerewolo is a pioneer in many ways. She is the first woman in her family to refuse to follow the socially prescribed path. The first Malian rapper to make it big. And the winner of many awards. And the founder of Mali's first all-female festival.

For Ami Yerewolo, rap is more than just music: it is her instrument for expressing her emotions and anger. With powerful, jagged rhythms and chants, the artist shares herself and infects the audience with her energetic nature. She likes to incorporate Malian instruments such as the kora, n'goni lute and yebara shaker into her bambara rap.

Ami grew up in Mahina, a small town in the south-west of Mali. Out of the village and into the rap scene: It took an admirable amount of courage to stand up not only to the sexism of her environment, but also to the machismo of hip-hop.

Her set will last about 70 minutes. Before and after the concert DJ Voilà Tim will play a selection of African grooves.
