With already 10 CDs and 30 to 50 concerts each year, the 15-year-old Swiss Jazz Orchestra (SJO) is Switzerland’s most active professional Big Band. The artistic independence and boundless playing enthusiasm are the important trade marks of the large line-up, in which some of the most exciting improvisational musicians are united. For the current project, Guillermo Klein, one of the most inspiring contemporary composers, was assigned a composition request. The music is equally modern and traditional, rich in content and full of humour, intellectually stimulating, yet also very emotional. To some extent the numbers are related to the city of Bern; several were inspired by the «Zytglogge» and its historical mechanism, another («Patent Office») by a famous previous inhabitant of the capital city, Albert Einstein. The orchestra revels in the wonderful timbres and characterful grooves of the compositions, and the band’s owns soloists define further parts of the program.
