The Konkolo Orchestra is a Zurich-based band centred around multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Alexis Malefakis. Their debut single «Blue G» (2022) was already a hit, now the album «Future Pasts» (2024) follows, a collection of funky to jazzy Afrobeat and highlife songs. An exuberant atmosphere and dancing mood are guaranteed when the Konkolo Orchestra performs in front of the audience with its light-hearted lyrics, cheerful melodies and a powerful brass section. This concert is free of charge, but admission is only guaranteed with a valid reservation.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Nikki Iles 

«Female Composers» Series 

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Nikki Iles was a founding member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra and has worked with Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler and Anthony Braxton. She has freelanced with Art Farmer, Julian Arguelles, Claire Martin and Christine Jenson and has been in the studio with Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Tina May, Rufus Reid, Stan Sulzmann and Dave Holland. Although she is known as a pianist, composing is and remains very important to her. Recently, she has received various commissions for compositions from renowned big bands all over the world. Nikki Iles is Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Some time ago, the ZJO launched the «Female Composers» series. The ZJO is particularly pleased to be working with Nikki Iles this season. This is the British composer&#x27;s first appearance as conductor of an orchestra in Switzerland.

Album Release «Stranger»

Ticino singer Andrea Bignasca is returning to Moods with his fourth album: «Stranger» will be released in October 2024 and tells stories of creating and writing songs, of becoming a father and love; and of the fears, doubts and joys that all these things bring with them. Bignasca&#x27;s sound has evolved since his debut album «Gone» in 2015 and has become a little more refined, with 80s drums and synths creeping in at times. Nevertheless, the songwriter remains true to himself and combines blues, rock and pop into catchy songs with his raspy voice.

The lower floor of the club is at ground level and accessible without steps. There is one accessible bathroom which can be used with a Eurokey. The bar is not accessible and is approximately 1.20 metres high.
Sensory stimuli: Most concerts are accompanied by moving lights and smoke.

The Zurich Kantonalbank encourages young, innovative Swiss bands with the ZKB Jazz Prize. The 15th edition of the ZKB Jazz Prize is a public six-day festival from 30th April to 5th May 2017 staged in Moods. For the finale on 5th May, the two jurors Elina Duni and Erik Truffaz will appear on stage with their musical collague Bugge Wesseltoft. In 2015 Raphael Loher and Urs Müller from Luzern and Nicolas Stocker from Zurich created the trio, Kali. Founded as a Working Band, they develop their own blend of contemporary classical, alternative rock and improvised music – as if Rage Against the Machine and Morton Feldman had a daughter. From wonderful minimalistic intermezzos to astonishingly catchy, dense and powerful compositions, they derive a broad, dynamic and stylistic range without ever losing their own sound.

Deeply influenced by Creole music as well as American jazz and folk, Leyla McCalla&#x27;s music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty. Her music vibrates with three centuries of history, yet feels strikingly fresh and unique. Leyla McCalla draws inspiration from her past and present, whether it&#x27;s her Haitian heritage or her adopted home of New Orleans. The bilingual multi-instrumentalist and former member of the Grammy-winning African-American string band, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, has developed a distinctive sound that reflects her roots and her experiences. Her latest album, &quot;Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever,&quot; explores the legacy of Radio Haiti, the first private Creole-language radio station in Haiti, as well as the journalists who risked and lost their lives to be on the air for nearly 50 years. The result is simultaneously a work of radical performance art, historical scholarship, and personal memoir, a sweeping and powerful meditation on family, democracy, and free expression that could not have come at a better time. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Silvan Strauss Ensemble

&quot;One of the most exciting and versatile jazz musicians in Hamburg&quot;. With this justification, Silvan Strauss, who comes from Allgäu, won the Hamburg Jazz Prize in 2021. Whether in his own band TOYTOY or as a sideman in bands like Maria João, Omer Klein or Giovanni Weiss, as a guest drummer of the NDR Bigband or in the Lisa Wulff Quartet, in which he has been a permanent member for eight years, Silvan Strauss stands out everywhere. With his Tiktok videos, the young German reaches an audience of millions. His video &quot;Latte Art&quot; alone, in which he creates music with a small milk jug on the basin, generated more than 1.9 million views. Now Silvan Strauss comes to Moods with his ensemble. Moods & Jazzhane present

Sababa5 is what the Psychedelic Music Explosion series stands for! That is, irregular rhythms, disco grooves, psychedelia, funk and their synthesis with Western pop from the 70s, rediscovered and reinterpreted in the 21st century. Sababa5 play a modern interpretation of Mizrahi music, a genre originally played in Israel by Syrian, Moroccan or Iraqi Jews and includes stylistic elements from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. A mix that is definitely very danceable!

Judith Hill

Judith Hill has already worked together with world stars such as Robbie Williams, Stevie Wonder and Elton John and became famous overnight when she sang «Heal The World» at the funeral of Michael Jackson – over 2 billion people watched on television. She appeared in the Oscar-winning documentary film «20 Feet From Stardom», generated a storm of enthusiasm in The Voice in the USA and the Rolling Stone Magazine praised her for her «outstanding powerhouse vocals». Her debut album «Back in Time» (2015) was produced by no-one less than Prince. Following a sensational show in Moods in 2019 to present her second album, «Golden Child», she now returns and brings along a new work: «Baby, I&#x27;m Hollywood!». We look forward to crisp, groovy Funk, Soul, R&#x27;n&#x27;B, to Jazzy ballads, to Judith&#x27;s impressive, distinctive voice and her great piano and guitar playing. Michael League (bassist, composer and bandleader) and Bill Laurence (pianist, composer and arranger), both members of the award-winning collective Snarky Puppy, have been stuck in Europe since the outbreak of the pandemic. So last fall they came up with the idea of recording a duo album and taking it on a small tour through Europe; joined by a handful of local musicians.  The album is inspired by oriental music and has been recorded a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately the planned tour had to be postponed for the moment for obvious reasons. Thanks to m4music, the pop music festival of the Migros Kulturprozent, they will come to Moods for a five day artist residency and work with four Swiss musicians. Culminating in a live stream performance on 5.4.2021. As soon as the public is admitted again, they will also play concerts in this line-up. Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba

He is recognised as the world’s best player of the Ngoni, a West African lute: Bassekou Kouyaté. No wonder, then, that greats like Youssou Ndour, Bono, Santana and Dee Dee Bridgewater have engaged him for their projects. On the new album «Miri» (2019) Kouyaté again totally leaves aside his electrical sound effects and displays a more thoughtful, acoustic side. Without bowing in the direction of Western listening habits, their sound combines the traditional Griot music from Mali with Blues and Rock&#x27;n&#x27;Roll. His wife and songstress Amy Sacko is described as Mali’s Tina Turner. Together as a sextet, they provide a spectacular, rhythmically strong and expressive performance of the pentatonic music of Mali.

Dave Holland Trio feat. Kevin Eubanks & Obed Calvaire

One of the most prominent figures of contemporary jazz on the Moods stage! The double-bass player Dave Holland has both a long and successful musical career under his belt, in which he has played with nearly all the greats of his time, amongst them Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Sam Rivers, to name but a few. Holland himself contributed significantly to the development of jazz fusion, but also allows himself to be driven into the realms of free jazz. His exceptional feel for rhythm and his outstanding technical abilities result in a natural groove, which in a trio guarantees musical delights!

She is quite simply the underground icon of Arabic pop! The Lebanese songstress, songwriter and actress Yasmine Hamdan (Soapkills) effortlessly combines Western electropop with traditional Arabic sounds. Her second album «Al Jamilat» (2017) sounds like a journey through the different cultures. With her soft, yet clear voice, the world citizen blends Arabic texts with modern electrobeats, desert blues guitar riffs and Greek Bouzouki sounds. A songstress that can give you goosebumps. Dominique Fils-Aimé is back with a new album and after several attempts finally plays the Moods stage for the first time. Following her successful trilogy of albums that traced the history of African-American culture and history and even earned her a JUNO for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year in 2020, comes her latest record, &quot;Our Roots Run Deep,&quot; which will be released in September 2023 on Ensoul Records. Inspired by soul icons such as Billie Holiday, Etta James and Nina Simone, the Canadian with Haitian roots tells of the wellspring of her soul and holds the audience with her voice in a soothing sonic embrace.

What have almost forgotten Japanese folk songs got to do with a cumbia beat? The answer is Minyo Crusaders! The ten-piece collective reworks traditional Japanese folk songs called Min&#x27;yō with Latin music such as cumbia, Ethiopian jazz, Thai pop, Afro-funk and reggae. The result sounds a little crazy, but is absolutely brilliant in a great way. Minyo Crusaders are the most infectious and hottest global beat party since Buena Vista Social Club. Anyway, the punchy and inventive arrangements breathe new life into the old Japanese min&#x27;yō, which are also traditional workers&#x27; songs.

Egopusher - 10 Years Celebration Rave

If you&#x27;ve ever seen Egopusher live, you&#x27;ll definitely remember a unique, epic live experience that makes every cell in your body vibrate and makes your head spin. On 11/22/2013 they played their first concert at the legendary offspace Perla Mode on Zurich&#x27;s Langstrasse. Since then, the band has toured Europe and Asia with their idiosyncratic blend of electronica and neoclassical music and released four albums, the last two of which were released on the Zurich-based label Quiet Love Records. This year Egopusher celebrate their 10th anniversary and therefore invite you to the 10 Years Celebration Rave at Moods. It may and must be danced!

Yarima Blanco Y Son Latino

Yarima Blanco is an outstanding Tres Cubano player and one of the few outside of Cuba to master this unique three-stringed instrument. With her own septet, Son Latino, she combines various Cuban styles with Latin American influences. Her electrifying performances showcase not only her impressive technique on the tres, but also her powerful voice and charisma. Blanco perfected her skills during several years of study in Cuba and quickly became a sought-after artist, also making waves on the international jazz scene with the orchestra ANACAONA. Pancho Amat, international master of the tres cubanos, describes Blanco&#x27;s talent as exceptional. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Leenalchi

Leenalchi shows us how experimental and avant-garde the K-pop scene can be. The band from Seoul has dedicated itself to reinterpreting the Korean storytelling genre Pansori, which is characterized by a special performance style with vocals and percussion. The band sings verses of traditional Korean fairy tales and draws musical inspiration from alt-rock and eighties new wave. By dissecting and rearranging traditional elements, the result is music that is forward-looking, but at the same time strongly rooted in tradition. In Korea itself, the band has long been established, filling concert halls, winning various Korean Music Awards, and appearing in a Netflix production. Leenalchi gained international attention in 2020 with their song Tiger Is Coming and subsequently thrilled audiences at renowned festivals including Roskilde, Pohoda, Womad, Fusion and the FMM Festival.

In this trio, cultural idiosyncrasies and cosmopolitanism come together with great skill and inspiration: Burhan Öçal&#x27;s Turkish rhythms combine with the melodic, poetic jazz of Europe and the powerful pulsating beat of London&#x27;s cultural melting pot of Heiri Känzig and Alex Wilson. Three extraordinary musicians have found each other! Courageous, full of relish and with joy in experimenting, they explore boundaries and create something new. Inspiration, improvisation and creation from three cultures meet and lead to a unique music and listening experience. Music becomes a world language!

Asmâa Hamzaoui & Bnat Timbouktou

Asmâa Hamzaoui and Bnat Timbouktou (the daughters of Timbuktu) represent a new generation of young women Gnawa performers, breaking new ground in a traditionally patriarchal realm. Asmâa Hamzaoui assimilated the Gnawa musical tradition from a young age through her father, renowned musician Rachid Hamzaoui, learning to play the guembri (three-string lute) from an early age and later accompanying him at celebrations. She formed Bnat Timbuktu in 2012, gradually winning over audiences, until their breakthrough invitation to the Gnaoua Festival of Essaouira in 2017. Their taboo-busting performance, and jamming with Fatoumata Diawara, won them invitations to major festivals in Europe and the USA, even without a recording to their name. Asmâa still comes up against opposition from some Gnawa traditionalists but as she says: “They can talk, but here I am working and they’re just talking.” This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Die langjährige und sehr fruchtbare Partnerschaft zwischen Thomas Gansch und dem Zurich Jazz Orchestra wird auch dieses Jahr fortgesetzt. Neben Repertoire aus der Vergangenheit wird es auch neue Arrangements geben, die von Ed Partyka speziell für dieses Konzert geschrieben wurden und die Thomas Gansch als Komponisten und Multi-Instrumental-Solisten, aber auch als liebenswürdiges ‹Enfant terrible› präsentieren. Sicher ist, dass die wunderbaren Musiker*innen des ZJO für einige musikalische Überraschungen sorgen werden. Sicher ist auch: Band und Publikum werden einen unvergesslichen Abend erleben.

Die 1981 als Tochter einer Schriftstellerin und eines Regisseurs in der albanischen Hauptstadt Tirana geborene Elina Duni stand im Alter von nur funf Jahren erstmals auf einer Bühne. Seit ihren ersten musikalischen Schritten in Radio und Fernsehen hat sich viel getan: Heute ist Elina Duni ECM-Künstlerin und seit 2017 Preisträgerin des Schweizer Musikpreises. In diesem ZKB Jazzpreis Special trifft der Oud-Virtuose Rabih Abou-Khalil auf das Elina Duni Trio mit Marc Méan und Matthieu Michel. Eine einmalige Konstellation, die wohl so einige goldene Momente mit sich bringen wird.

Joseph Bowie’s Big Band Funk - The Legendary Music of Defunkt

Joseph Bowie ist der Bruder des Big-Band-Musikers Byron Bowie und des Mitbegründers des Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lester Bowie. Joe selbst gründete 1978 die Punk-Funk-Jazz-Gruppe «Defunkt». Die Band veröffentlichte in den 1980er Jahren mehrere genreübergreifende Alben, und ihre Musik wurde als «einer der abenteuerlichsten Sounds des letzten Viertels des 20 Jahrhunderts» bezeichnet. In den letzten 20 Jahren hat Joe Bowie auch daran gearbeitet, diese Musik für Big Band zu adaptieren. Einer der Arrangeure, mit denen Joe seit 2011 zusammenarbeitet, ist Ed Partyka. Das ZJO freut sich auf einen energiegeladenen Abend mit tanzbaren Hits aus der langen Geschichte von «Defunkt».

Orchestra Baobab

Letztes Jahr feierte das Orchestra Baobab, eine der grössten Bands Afrikas, ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen. Ihre Geschichte beginnt im Herzen der Medina von Dakar im Senegal der späten 1960er Jahren und erstreckt sich über die ganze Welt und bis ins 21. Jahrhundert. Die Gruppe aus Sängern und Musikern vom ganzen Kontinent spielen eine Mischung aus afro-und lateinamerikanischen Stilen, internationalem Pop und traditioneller Griot-Musik. Nach dem ausverkauften Konzert vom letzten Jahr kehrt die Band diesen August zurück ins Moods. Vor und nach dem Konzert werden die beiden DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim auflegen.

Welch ein Glück: Frau Schmidhauser ersteht eine Gitarre, findet jedoch nicht genug Zeit, um zu üben. Also übereignet sie das Instrument ihren Buben. Beat und Jürg machen nicht lange Federlesens und rocken los. Einige Zeit danach spielt Beat, inzwischen zum Schmidi gereift, mit 14 Jahren seinen ersten Gig. Heute, rund 1500 Konzerte und 46 Jährchen später, beglückt uns Schmidi zum letzten Mal live, denn – und zu unserem Bedauern – «es ist genug des Guten.» Er will sich fortan Dingen widmen, die in all den Jahren zu kurz gekommen sind und somit zwar nicht kürzertreten, aber breiter wirken. Unbeschreibliches hat Schmidi auf tausendundeiner Bühne erlebt, unterwegs mit «Stop the Shoppers», «HOT DC», «Los Hobos», «Chica Torpedo», «Traktorkestar», «Oso loco», mit Polo, Kuno, Endo, Büne, Sina, Lo &amp; Leduc – und immer wieder mit Jürg/Jiri, dem geliebten Brüetsch. Also dann: Bühne frei! Vor unseren Augen und Ohren schaltet Schmidi seinen Modus um: vom Künstlerleben zum Lebenskünstler.

Ein Jahr nachdem ihr fünftes Studioalbum Album «Longing Fever» den ‹Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award› abgeräumt hat, ist Evelinn Trouble mit ihrer Band wieder auf Tour. Evelinn Trouble, bekannt für ihre kreative Rastlosigkeit, ihre virtuose Stimme und ihr eigenwilliges Songwriting hat ihrer Diskografie mit «Longing Fever» ein aufregendes Pop-Werk hinzugefügt – ein Bruch mit ihrer Psychedelic-Ära und trotzdem unverkennbar Trouble. Ein spannendes Album, das Höhen und Tiefen mit Inbrunst durchläuft und von beatlesken Liebesliedern zu euphorischen Melodien reicht, die von verzerrtem Hip-Hop getragen werden. Unerwartet gesellen sich neu Klänge von Streichinstrumenten zum sonst dunklen Klanguniversum der Zürcher Sängerin: Ein Streichtrio erweitert die Band zum «Evelinn Trouble Orchestra». Diese Konzertaufnahme entstand mit Unterstützung des Migros-Kulturprozent.

Yarima Blanco ist eine herausragende Tres-Cubano-Spielerin und eine der wenigen ausserhalb Kubas, die dieses einzigartige dreisaitige Instrument beherrschen. Mit ihrem eigenen Septett Son Latino verbindet sie verschiedene kubanische Stile mit lateinamerikanischen Einflüssen. Ihre mitreissenden Auftritte zeigen nicht nur ihre beeindruckende Technik auf der Tres, sondern auch ihre starke Stimme und ihr Charisma. Blanco perfektionierte ihr Können während eines mehrjährigen Studiums in Kuba und avancierte schnell zu einer gefragten Künstlerin, die auch mit dem Orchester ANACAONA in der internationalen Jazzszene für Aufsehen sorgte. Pancho Amat, internationaler Meister des Tres Cubanos, beschreibt Blancos Talent als aussergewöhnlich.

Aus ihrer Heimatstadt London heraus erobert die Sängerin Summer Pearl zur Zeit die Musikwelt im Sturm. Ihr Sound aus Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop und Dub, der an diejenigen der grossen Eryka Badu erinnert, ist mächtig und zugleich berührend. Summer Pearl beschreibt ihn als «eine Meditation über meine Vergangenheit und eine Reflexion über unsere Gegenwart. Sie ist sowohl eine persönliche als auch eine politische Botschaft, die sich mit der schwarzen und weiblichen Befreiung sowie mit gewonnener und verlorener Liebe beschäftigt.»

Die in der DR Kongo Kinshasa geborene und in der Schweiz aufgewachsene Sängerin und Multi-Instrumentalistin hat in den letzten zehn Jahren ihren eigenen, hausgemachten Stil zwischen Afro, Neo Soul und Trip Hop entwickelt. Eine unvergessliche Stimme trifft auf kongolesische Perkussionsfreude und überraschende Flöteneinlagen und setzt Kräfte frei, bei denen der Optimismus zurückkehrt und das Tanzen unausweichlich wird. Ein Sound, der ein neues Gefühl der Zusammengehörigkeit schafft und das Versprechen, dass alles gut werden wird. Quasi two trios plus one. Their comet-like ascendance is also without parallel: a sold-out debut album, a closely-watched collaboration with Shabaka Hutchings and performances at all the renowned Jazz festivals from Frankfurt to Montreal, from Istanbul to Mexico, speak for themselves. And then there&#x27;s that sound: driving rhythms, the horns sometimes blaring, sometimes virtuoso, sometimes melodious, borrowings from Afrobeats, Funk and Swing. Rapper Anna Frey and guitarist Flo Stoffner, with Vincent Membrez on synthesizers and Lukas Mantel on drums, develop an intensity that is hard to resist. «Less than little is nothing, but little is more than nothing, little makes a difference.» This band is not afraid of the void and does not cover it up, but faces it, follows it and thus develops its own language, with driving grooves, poppy melodies, free improvisation, idiosyncratic guitars and dark, engaging basses. Rapper Anna Frey moves over this musical diversity with her poetic lyrics. Sometimes in singsong, sometimes in harsh phrasing. Always in search of the immediate expression.

FRAME.OUT is a musical storytelling about personal boundaries and social conventions. Victoria Mozalevskaya invites the audience on a journey that explores the facets of life. Together with singer Song Yi Jeon, whose voice captivates the audience, and the energetic, innovative sound of the duo Lada Obradovic and David Tixier, the quartet delves deep into its musical world – into complex grooves and experimental sound formation in the context of contemporary jazz. It is an exploration of the individual stories that make the four musicians who they are and how they reflect the world through their music.

Back in 2009, their fresh rock/post-rock electronic sound, described as euphoric, holistic, spacey, and raucous quickly catapulted the Jordanian-Palestinian band from Amman to massive success; an artistic journey that saw them become one of the leading socially and politically outspoken bands reviving the Arab independent music scene. El Morabba3 broke cultural barriers and appealed to a generation of hunger-stricken fans living in an unstable and restless region, as they craved a new sound; one that expressed the thoughts, concerns, and anger of the people towards the realities they are living today. Today, Muhammad Abdulla and Basel Naouri live in Berlin, they have restructured the band and take El Morabba3&#x27;s earlier aesthetic evolution into a new direction. Departing from the raw post-rock energy of the first album and the polished instrumental/electronic fervor of the second, the artists have taken a deep dive into experimentation with electronic tunes and storytelling.

Yumi Ito, a Swiss singer with Polish-Japanese roots, moves effortlessly between genres and her roles as singer, pianist, composer and improviser. She has performed twice with the ZJO, and Ed Partyka is very much looking forward to arranging some of Yumi&#x27;s brand new compositions. The audience can expect an evening of unusual sounds, refreshing and inspiring moments – and surprises: As Yumi Ito&#x27;s music is conceived and composed for smaller ensembles, Ed Partyka&#x27;s big band arrangements open up new worlds of sound.

Her love, passion and respect for music can be felt in the sparkling authenticity of her performances in which her soaring voice immediately grabs your attention and her well-crafted compositions present effusive emotions through conscious and engaged lyrics. Montreal based, she has been garnering international attention for almost a decade, striking with her electrifying performance on “Iʼm not the one”, a prime track on the Grammy-winning album “Family Dinner” by Snarky Puppy that has been inspiring countless covers worldwide. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Siselabonga are back with a new EP called &#x27;In Stone&#x27;. This time, South African singer-songwriter Nongoma takes the mic as the group moves through a kaleidoscopic mix of acoustic and electronic sounds. The rhythmic foundation is West African to the core, with selected elements of hip-hop, soul, Afrobeats and electro-pop thrown in for good measure. Lively, sensual and transcendent. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.
