Dominique Fils-Aimé is back with a new album and after several attempts finally plays the Moods stage for the first time. Following her successful trilogy of albums that traced the history of African-American culture and history and even earned her a JUNO for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year in 2020, comes her latest record, &quot;Our Roots Run Deep,&quot; which will be released in September 2023 on Ensoul Records. Inspired by soul icons such as Billie Holiday, Etta James and Nina Simone, the Canadian with Haitian roots tells of the wellspring of her soul and holds the audience with her voice in a soothing sonic embrace.

One of Brazil&#x27;s most influential and longest running bands, Azymuth has created an entirely new sound: Jazz-funk and samba fused into an infectious blend known as “Samba Doido”. They have played with just about everyone throughout Brazil’s golden era of MPB, jazz, soul and funk (including Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento, Tim Maia, Elis Regina and Marcos Valle, to name just a few). In addition to their influence on jazz and funk, Azymuth&#x27;s worldwide contribution to electronic music and hip-hop is undeniable. They have collaborated with greats such as 4hero, Madlib and Jazzanova and can be heard in various remixes. Fifty years after their formation, Azymuth have released over thirty albums and are still busy writing, recording and playing. And with the same energy as at the beginning of their career. Even after the unexpected death of drummer and founding member Ivan Mamão Conti in the spring of 2023, there are no signs of fatigue. With Renato Massa, one of Brazil&#x27;s most renowned drummers, a more than worthy replacement has been built to honor Mamão&#x27;s memory and legacy and keep the spirit of Azymuth alive. This masterclass is an opportunity for both musicians and music enthusiasts to ask the Jazz Funk legends any questions they&#x27;ve always wanted to ask. The voice of the young Swiss singer and composer Cinzia Catania is unique - crystal clear and yet warm and soft. Light as a feather and with rhythmic precision she sings Bossa Nova and Swing. Due to her versatility and vocal flexibility, she is active in numerous national and international projects of different styles: from jazz, Latin, world, pop and electronic music to Swiss folk music. Cinzia studied jazz composition in Lucerne with Ed Partyka and has established herself as one of the most interesting composers of music for jazz orchestras of her generation.

Born in 1981 as the daughter of a writer and a director in the Albanian capital Tirana, Elina Duni first appeared on stage at the age of just five. Arthur Donnot is an up-and-coming musician from Lausanne whose calm breath on the saxophone unfolds a warm sound all its own, almost reminiscent of organic singing. The singer and composer from Graubünden has been on stage for 50 years. In recent years, she has become best known in this country for her adaptations of Romansh folk songs. It is almost forgotten that the &quot;Grande Dame of Chanzun Rumantscha&quot; has had a unique musical career. Between 1990 and 2010, she worked in Berlin, Paris, London, NYC and Vienna with an astonishing variety of international jazz greats. With her tour, Corin Curschellas celebrates her 50th stage anniversary with a band of her choice, made up of her former Parisian musical companions: guitarist Noël Akchoté, pianist Benoît Delbecq, drummer Steve Argüelles, accordionist Patricia Draeger and bassist Lukas Traxel.

Efrat Alony and Ed Partyka have been working together for almost 20 years and have recorded with the Sunday Night Orchestra and the Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestra. They have also performed together with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra and the HR Big Band. The singer, bandleader and composer, who now lives in Germany, began her music studies in Haifa and completed them in Boston. This night&#x27;s programme is just as international. It consists of modern Jewish folk songs and original compositions by Efrat Alony, arranged by Ed Partyka for jazz orchestra and the warm, sometimes gentle-melancholic, sometimes determined voice of Efrat Alony.

A battered parlour piano, next to it a simply equipped drum set: that&#x27;s all Hely need. The young Zurich duo of pianist Lucca Fries and drummer Jonas Ruther start their pieces from nowhere and let them end in somewhere. The audience closes its eyes, opens its ears wide and floats away into inner spaces or worlds of thought. With driving rhythms and intoxicating sounds, the two musicians play themselves and their audience into ecstasy. What this acoustic duo creates in terms of sound intensity is extraordinary - and brings joy: anticipation for their new album &quot;Plode&quot;, which will be released in April 2023 on Nik Bärtsch&#x27;s boutique label Ronin Rhythm Records.

During every performance, her band explores its own boundaries, constantly seeking new ways to make a typical jazz quintet sound decidedly atypical, fresh and unique.

The long-standing and very fruitful partnership between Thomas Gansch and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra will continue this year. In addition to repertoire from the past, there will also be new arrangements written by Ed Partyka especially for this concert, presenting Thomas Gansch as a composer and multi-instrumental soloist, but also as an amiable &#x27;enfant terrible&#x27;. One thing is certain: the wonderful musicians of the ZJO will provide some musical surprises. It is also certain that the band and the audience will experience an unforgettable evening.

German composer and pianist Claudia Döffinger presents her compositions and arrangements together with Australian singer Kristin Berardi with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. Claudia Döffinger&#x27;s love for the sound of big bands is palpable through her fresh approach: she combines experimental sounds with dense chords. In this way, hip-hop, indie and funk merge organically with her works and yet sound entirely new. Claudia Döffinger is the winner of the Downbeat Student Music Award, won 1st prize at the Helsinki Jazz Composition Contest and 3rd prize at the Composition Contest Katowice. In addition to jazz standards and earlier original compositions, music from Kristin Berardi&#x27;s new album &quot;The Light and the Dark&quot; will also be heard in big band arrangements.

Each musician in this cross-cultural urban-diaspora quintet is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. British-Nigerian singer and songwriter Ola Onabulé has always been interested in crossing cultural and musical boundaries. His three-and-a-half octave baritone is the perfect instrument to do so. Al Jarreau has been a major influence on his singing and composing style. Today, Ola is at home in jazz, R&amp;B and soul, but also in pop, and is in great demand as an artist worldwide. The programme consists of Ed Partyka&#x27;s arrangements of Ola&#x27;s original compositions, but also of new arrangements that the bandleader has written especially for this evening and the soloists of the ZJO.

Yumi Ito is not only a distinguished musician, but also an independent composer and singer who moves weightlessly and at the same time competently between jazz, art-pop, electronica, free improvisation and neo-classical music, generating a sound that comes across as fresh and often surprising. The musician, composer and arranger with Polish and Japanese roots navigates through the musical fields with concentration and precision, unwaveringly following her own path. Ed Partyka arranges the guest singer&#x27;s compositions for the Zurich Jazz Orchestra and its soloists. The music comes mainly from Yumi Ito&#x27;s critically acclaimed albums &quot;Stardust Crystals&quot; and &quot;Ekual&quot;.
