50-jähriges Bühnenjubiläum

The singer and composer from Graubünden has been on stage for 50 years. In recent years, she has become best known in this country for her adaptations of Romansh folk songs. It is almost forgotten that the &quot;Grande Dame of Chanzun Rumantscha&quot; has had a unique musical career. Between 1990 and 2010, she worked in Berlin, Paris, London, NYC and Vienna with an astonishing variety of international jazz greats. With her tour, Corin Curschellas celebrates her 50th stage anniversary with a band of her choice, made up of her former Parisian musical companions: guitarist Noël Akchoté, pianist Benoît Delbecq, drummer Steve Argüelles, accordionist Patricia Draeger and bassist Lukas Traxel.

Singer and songwriter Luedji Luna is a prominent name in the Brazilian music scene. Winner of numerous awards and nominated for the Latin Grammy Best MPB Album in 2022, she soon achieved notoriety far beyond the country&#x27;s borders. Her music explores and celebrates the connections between her homeland and her African roots, and addresses the marginalizations of Afro-Brazilians and women in Brazil. This theme, coupled with her soulful voice, carries an infectious energy that is already palpable in her albums or online at the NPR Tiny Desk Concert, but especially unfolds live into an unforgettable musical experience. What have almost forgotten Japanese folk songs got to do with a cumbia beat? The answer is Minyo Crusaders! The ten-piece collective reworks traditional Japanese folk songs called Min&#x27;yō with Latin music such as cumbia, Ethiopian jazz, Thai pop, Afro-funk and reggae. The result sounds a little crazy, but is absolutely brilliant in a great way. Minyo Crusaders are the most infectious and hottest global beat party since Buena Vista Social Club. Anyway, the punchy and inventive arrangements breathe new life into the old Japanese min&#x27;yō, which are also traditional workers&#x27; songs.

Moods members are guaranteed admission to every event until 30 minutes before the concert starts. Only shows with a high demand require a reservation. The corresponding concerts are marked on the website with "Member-Reservation".

Everyone should have the opportunity to participate in the events at Moods.

The earthquake that struck south-eastern Turkey, the Kurdish areas and Syria has left countless people in distress. Our thoughts are with the survivors, friends and relatives of the earthquake victims. We wish everyone much strength and want to help: Therefore, we will collect donations at the concerts and forward them to selected NGOs. Sababa5 is what the Psychedelic Music Explosion series stands for! That is, irregular rhythms, disco grooves, psychedelia, funk and their synthesis with Western pop from the 70s, rediscovered and reinterpreted in the 21st century. Sababa5 play a modern interpretation of Mizrahi music, a genre originally played in Israel by Syrian, Moroccan or Iraqi Jews and includes stylistic elements from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. A mix that is definitely very danceable!

&quot;One of the most exciting and versatile jazz musicians in Hamburg&quot;. With this justification, Silvan Strauss, who comes from Allgäu, won the Hamburg Jazz Prize in 2021. Whether in his own band TOYTOY or as a sideman in bands like Maria João, Omer Klein or Giovanni Weiss, as a guest drummer of the NDR Bigband or in the Lisa Wulff Quartet, in which he has been a permanent member for eight years, Silvan Strauss stands out everywhere. With his Tiktok videos, the young German reaches an audience of millions. His video &quot;Latte Art&quot; alone, in which he creates music with a small milk jug on the basin, generated more than 1.9 million views. Now Silvan Strauss comes to Moods with his ensemble. Brian Jackson Trio

Brian Jackson became known together with Gil Scott-Heron. In this power-duo, within only 8 years, he wrote, arranged and produced more than ten albums. His music is to be found on over 100 tracks such as «The People» (on «We Almost Lost Detroit») or Kendrick Lamars «Poe Mans Dreams» (on «Peace Go With You, Brother»). Almost 40 years later Brian Jackson works with such diverse artistes as Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (Midnight Hour, A Tribe Called Quest), the singer Gregory Porter, Christopher «Puma» Smith (The Archives, Thievery Corporation), the jazz violinist Scott Tixier or the legendary bassist Charnett Moffett. In the process he takes inspiratinon from both the present and the past: «This music is not really mine. I have learnt it from those who came before me. It is my task, to relate, what I have learned. Their music moves between Psychedelic Rock, Punk and New Wave with political and socio-critical song texts. Since the foundation in 2013 the duo has played over 160 concerts in Switzerland and abroad, from big club and festival stages to small DIY gigs. On their second album, «WET», (release on 20. August 2021 on the Swiss label Hummus Records) the two musicians now expand the possibility of the bass + drum tandem with unforeseen sounds and influences from improvised music. The result of the mix is a freshly squeezed Ester-Poly juice with a bitter socio-critical aftertaste.

Dino Brandão

Swiss artist of Angolan origin Dino Brandão summons his rich influences in a vibrant fusion blending continents and languages. Surrounded by his instruments and stomp boxes, the former street musician vacillates between sunny psychedelic melodies and melancholic afro-folk tunes. After releasing the well-acclaimed collaborative album ‘Ich liebe Dich’ with Faber and Sophie Hunger, Dino is now preparing his first single due out this year.

Erik Truffaz became known in the 90&#x27;s through his blend of Jazz with electronic club music. Not only does his lyrical tone remind us of Miles Davis, but also his skillful selection of musical companions and boundless desire to experiment: thus in recent years he has collaborated with, among others, Bugge Wesseltoft, Talvin Singh, Ed Harcourt, Sophie Hunger and Anna Aaron and released 10 albums on the legendary Blue Note jazz label. During the evening in Moods he will present his latest, «Lune Rouge».

«FLY OR DIE»

Jaimie Branch has already contributed to a broad palette of projects, not only in Jazz, but also in Punk, Noise, Indie-Rock and Hip-Hop. Rather less well known, yet equally enchanting, is her work as composer and producer. These can first be discovered on her debut album «Fly or Die»: a 35-minute ride through all sorts of musical genres that knows no boundaries - always held together by the spooky sounds that she extracts from her trumpet.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80

Stormy music, merciless rhythms and an incredible groove: Seun is the son of Fela Kuti, the founder of Afrobeat, which once set Nigeria’s dictators in fear and panic. During his concerts, the young Seun – who is equally singer, soloist and saxophonist – reflect his father’s anger, yet has the charisma and wit of a great entertainer. Even as a child, Seun was part of Fela’s legendary band, the Egypt 80, which still accompanies him to this day. Seun plays Afrobeat in the family tradition and breathes his own, fresh spirit into them with influences from Rap and Hip Hop. A few months ago he released an EP with three new songs, co-produced by Robert Glasper.

Mohamed Abozekry «Karkade»

He juggles with the traditional musical styles of his North African homeland, the creativity of jazz with the power of rock music: the Egyptian Oud player, Mohamed Abozekry, who these days lives in France. The traditional Arabesque sounds of the Oriental lute meet up with Flamenco and South American influences. Abozekry learnt to play the Oud from an early age with the famous Naseer Shamma in his «House of the Arabian Lute» in Cairo. At 15, he was already the youngest teacher of the instrument in the Arabic world. «Karkadé» is the name of his newest project. Supported by SüdKulturFonds

February sees the release of her album «Onkalo», and the evening in Moods celebrates its launch.

They describe their style as «Gospel Porn» and otherwise simply bristle with self-irony and satire: the two enfants terribles are known as Wanlov The Kubolor and Rapper MC M3nsa Ansah, and they stir up the music scene of Ghana with their trippy sound. The Fokn Bois use groovy Hip-Hop, Dub and Afro-Techno as the foundation for their ingenious and bawdy texts in Afro-English slang. Their high-energy concerts, where they will be accompanied by keyboarder Andras Weil, remind us of unusual art performances. The Meridian Brothers from Bogotá really stir up the tropical sound: traditional Latin American musical styles get a mauling and distorted to the absurd. What originally started as an experimental project by the avantgarde musician Eblis Alvarez, it has meanwhile as developed to a Live-Band, which significantly stretches the definition of Latin music with a variety of instruments and synthesizers. So far, that Cumbia takes on a a psychedelic form and Salsa becomes progressive rock. Supported by SüdKulturFonds

Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba

He is recognised as the world’s best player of the Ngoni, a West African lute: Bassekou Kouyaté. No wonder, then, that greats like Youssou Ndour, Bono, Santana and Dee Dee Bridgewater have engaged him for their projects. On the new album «Miri» (2019) Kouyaté again totally leaves aside his electrical sound effects and displays a more thoughtful, acoustic side. Without bowing in the direction of Western listening habits, their sound combines the traditional Griot music from Mali with Blues and Rock&#x27;n&#x27;Roll. His wife and songstress Amy Sacko is described as Mali’s Tina Turner. Together as a sextet, they provide a spectacular, rhythmically strong and expressive performance of the pentatonic music of Mali.

«Teranga»

On his current album «Teranga» (2017), guitarist Hervé Samb explores his Senegalese roots and based on this creates a new genre. Traditional West African rhythms and lyrical guitar melodies are echoed in Jazz classics, as if they had always belonged there. One could perhaps call this style Sabar-Jazz, with which Hervé Samb honours his land of origin and invites the audience on a journey to Senegal, the land of hospitality, or indeed «Teranga». Don Byron & Aruan Ortiz Duo

Wonderful dialogues between two outstanding instrumentalists and improvisers: in the Downtown New York scene, the world-known clarinetist Don Byron constantly tried out new mix ratios between Jazz-Tradition, Classical and Klezmer. Together with the Cuban pianist Aruán Ortiz, whose solo album «Cub(an)isme» received a rare five-star review from the American Jazz magazine «Downbeat», they form a top-class duo. The program features own compositions and standards, Afro-Cuban Swing, Modern Jazz and awareness of tradition. In the best klezmer tradition, Cheibe Balagan draws on various musical influences - from Eastern Europe to Switzerland to Japan - and fuses them into rousing, danceable pieces. The Zurich septet gained national fame through the soundtrack of the hit movie «Wolkenbruch» and since then has been creating an exuberant atmosphere, whether at the Montreux Jazz Festival, street festivals or in dimly lit bars. At Moods, Cheibe Balagan will release their third Album answering the essential questions of life such as: What do unicorn hunters have in common with in-laws? How do you greet the mice in the kitchen? And how many onions belong in a pot of «gefilte fish»?

Die langjährige und sehr fruchtbare Partnerschaft zwischen Thomas Gansch und dem Zurich Jazz Orchestra wird auch dieses Jahr fortgesetzt. Neben Repertoire aus der Vergangenheit wird es auch neue Arrangements geben, die von Ed Partyka speziell für dieses Konzert geschrieben wurden und die Thomas Gansch als Komponisten und Multi-Instrumental-Solisten, aber auch als liebenswürdiges ‹Enfant terrible› präsentieren. Sicher ist, dass die wunderbaren Musiker*innen des ZJO für einige musikalische Überraschungen sorgen werden. Sicher ist auch: Band und Publikum werden einen unvergesslichen Abend erleben.

Ein Jahr nachdem ihr fünftes Studioalbum Album «Longing Fever» den ‹Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award› abgeräumt hat, ist Evelinn Trouble mit ihrer Band wieder auf Tour. Evelinn Trouble, bekannt für ihre kreative Rastlosigkeit, ihre virtuose Stimme und ihr eigenwilliges Songwriting hat ihrer Diskografie mit «Longing Fever» ein aufregendes Pop-Werk hinzugefügt – ein Bruch mit ihrer Psychedelic-Ära und trotzdem unverkennbar Trouble. Ein spannendes Album, das Höhen und Tiefen mit Inbrunst durchläuft und von beatlesken Liebesliedern zu euphorischen Melodien reicht, die von verzerrtem Hip-Hop getragen werden. Unerwartet gesellen sich neu Klänge von Streichinstrumenten zum sonst dunklen Klanguniversum der Zürcher Sängerin: Ein Streichtrio erweitert die Band zum «Evelinn Trouble Orchestra».

Yarima Blanco ist eine herausragende Tres-Cubano-Spielerin und eine der wenigen ausserhalb Kubas, die dieses einzigartige dreisaitige Instrument beherrschen. Mit ihrem eigenen Septett Son Latino verbindet sie verschiedene kubanische Stile mit lateinamerikanischen Einflüssen. Ihre mitreissenden Auftritte zeigen nicht nur ihre beeindruckende Technik auf der Tres, sondern auch ihre starke Stimme und ihr Charisma. Blanco perfektionierte ihr Können während eines mehrjährigen Studiums in Kuba und avancierte schnell zu einer gefragten Künstlerin, die auch mit dem Orchester ANACAONA in der internationalen Jazzszene für Aufsehen sorgte. Pancho Amat, internationaler Meister des Tres Cubanos, beschreibt Blancos Talent als aussergewöhnlich. Vor und nach dem Konzert lädt DJ Saltho zum tanzen ein.

Efrat Alony und Ed Partyka arbeiten schon bald 20 Jahre lang zusammen und haben Aufnahmen mit dem Sunday Night Orchestra und dem Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestra gemacht. Darüber hinaus sind sie gemeinsam mit dem UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra und der HR Big Band aufgetreten. Die Sängerin, Bandleaderin und Komponistin, die heute in Deutschland lebt, begann ihr Musikstudium in Haifa und schloss es in Boston ab. Genauso international ist das Programm des Abends. Es besteht aus modernen jüdischen Volksliedern und Originalkompositionen von Efrat Alony, die von Ed Partyka für Jazzorchester und die warme, bald sanft-melancholische, bald dezidierte Stimme Efrat Alonys arrangiert wurden.

Carebender ist ein achtköpfiges Berliner Vokalensemble, das sich der experimentellen Musik annimmt und mittels gesanglichen Kompositionen ein wagemutiges Spiel mit Schönheit und abstrakter Kunstform betreibt. Ihr erstes Album «What We Talk About» erschien im März 2022 bei BlauBlauRecords und wird als Acappella-Moment gegen die Wut beschrieben, die Wut die im Magen lauert und immer im falschen Moment ausbricht. Im Moods präsentieren Carebender diese Songs zum ersten Mal einem Live-Publikum.

Der britisch-nigerianische Singer und Songwriter Ola Onabulé war schon immer daran interessiert, kulturelle und musikalische Grenzen zu überschreiten. Sein dreieinhalb Oktaven umfassender Bariton, ist das perfekte Instrument dazu. Al Jarreau hat seinen Gesangs- und Kompositionsstil massgeblich beeinflusst. Heute ist Ola im Jazz, R&amp;B und Soul, aber auch im Pop zu Hause und als Künstler weltweit sehr gefragt. Das Programm besteht aus Ed Partykas Bearbeitungen von Olas Originalkompositionen, aber auch aus neuen Arrangements, die der Bandleader speziell für diesen Abend und die Solisten des ZJO geschrieben hat.

Das Marie Krüttli Trio beeindruckt, ist aufregend, bunt und gewagt. Mit reifem Ton, eindeutiger Ästhetik und betörender Virtuosität manövriert die Welschschweizerin sich und Ihre Bandkollegen durch vertrackte Rhythmusgebilde und verwobene Akkordketten. Groovig schillern die Melodien, charmant und mit viel hintergründigem Witz erscheinen die Akteure, stets tief in der europäischen Klaviertradition verankert und von den Klangidealen eines Strawinsky und Debussy beeinflusst sind.

Sun Mi Hong Quintet

Als eines der führenden aufstrebenden Talente der Amsterdamer Szene, hat sich die geborene Koreanerin Sun-Mi einen Ruf für ihre unerschöpfliche  Kreativität und Energie gemacht. Ihre Musik reicht von Momenten der puren Leidenschaft und zu belebender Katharsis, verlangt nach Aufmerksamkeit und konzentriertem Zuhören. Bei jedem Auftritt lotet ihre Band die eigenen Grenzen aus und sucht ständig nach neuen Wegen, um ein typisches Jazzquintett entschieden untypisch, frisch und einzigartig klingen zu lassen.

Alle Mitglieder dieses kulturübergreifenden Quintetts sind sowohl Sänger*innen als auch Multiinstrumentalist*innen. Ihre Musik ist durchdrungen von alten und neuen Volkstraditionen, ihre Botschaft handelt von Emanzipation und Brüderlichkeit. Sie singen in ihren Muttersprachen (Türkisch, Armenisch, Englisch und Französisch) und erzählen die Geschichte einer inneren Heimat, die an Exil, kulturelle Vermischung und Erneuerung gewöhnt ist. Das 2012 in Paris gegründete Kollektiv hat zahlreiche Reisen durch Europa hinter sich, tritt aber auch regelmässig in Nordamerika und im Nahen Osten auf. Sie lieben Begegnungen und Austausch, egal ob sie in Grossstädten oder abgelegenen Dörfern auftreten.

OORT CLOUD concentrates on the expansion of the classical guitar trio sound and discover new, unconventional ways of interaction, composition and improvisation. The instrumentation loses its typical role models through the experimentation with preparations, electronic effects, playing techniques, together with sophisticated concepts for composotion and improvisation.

With A Shake Stew, Austria&#x27;s Jazz band of the hour, much is extraordinary. Starting with the line-up: two drummers, two bass players, two saxophones, a trumpet. Quasi two trios plus one. Their comet-like ascendance is also without parallel: a sold-out debut album, a closely-watched collaboration with Shabaka Hutchings and performances at all the renowned Jazz festivals from Frankfurt to Montreal, from Istanbul to Mexico, speak for themselves. And then there&#x27;s that sound: driving rhythms, the horns sometimes blaring, sometimes virtuoso, sometimes melodious, borrowings from Afrobeats, Funk and Swing. Music that reveals a hypnotic spell, one wants to soak up every note, to dance, to shake oneself and hope that it will never stop.

Yarima Blanco is an outstanding Tres Cubano player and one of the few outside of Cuba to master this unique three-stringed instrument. With her own septet, Son Latino, she combines various Cuban styles with Latin American influences. Her electrifying performances showcase not only her impressive technique on the tres, but also her powerful voice and charisma. Blanco perfected her skills during several years of study in Cuba and quickly became a sought-after artist, also making waves on the international jazz scene with the orchestra ANACAONA. Pancho Amat, international master of the tres cubanos, describes Blanco&#x27;s talent as exceptional. Before and after the concert DJ Saltho invites you to dance.

James Brandon Lewis

&quot;A saxophonist who embodies and transcends tradition,&quot; wrote the New York Times about James Brandon Lewis. In just over a decade, he has become one of the most celebrated young jazz artists. An artist who has carved out a niche for himself with his unique blend of gospel, blues and R&amp;B with the stirring sax explorations of John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Sonny Rollins. Efrat Alony and Ed Partyka have been working together for almost 20 years and have recorded with the Sunday Night Orchestra and the Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestra. They have also performed together with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra and the HR Big Band. The singer, bandleader and composer, who now lives in Germany, began her music studies in Haifa and completed them in Boston. This night&#x27;s programme is just as international. It consists of modern Jewish folk songs and original compositions by Efrat Alony, arranged by Ed Partyka for jazz orchestra and the warm, sometimes gentle-melancholic, sometimes determined voice of Efrat Alony.

It is an organic album produced by real musicians in a very lively mood. And even if the blues has lost its most faithful missionary since the death of the late B.B. King, Malia and &quot;The Garden Of Eve&quot; offer a nice rejuvenation that gives a modern touch to this genre and will enchant new groups of blues lovers.

A battered parlour piano, next to it a simply equipped drum set: that&#x27;s all Hely need. The young Zurich duo of pianist Lucca Fries and drummer Jonas Ruther start their pieces from nowhere and let them end in somewhere. The audience closes its eyes, opens its ears wide and floats away into inner spaces or worlds of thought. With driving rhythms and intoxicating sounds, the two musicians play themselves and their audience into ecstasy. What this acoustic duo creates in terms of sound intensity is extraordinary - and brings joy: anticipation for their new album &quot;Plode&quot;, which will be released in April 2023 on Nik Bärtsch&#x27;s boutique label Ronin Rhythm Records.

One of the leading emerging talents on the Amsterdam scene, Korean-born Sun-Mi has made a reputation for her inexhaustible creativity and energy. Her music ranges from moments of pure passion to invigorating catharsis, demanding attention and focused listening. During every performance, her band explores its own boundaries, constantly seeking new ways to make a typical jazz quintet sound decidedly atypical, fresh and unique.

The long-standing and very fruitful partnership between Thomas Gansch and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra will continue this year. In addition to repertoire from the past, there will also be new arrangements written by Ed Partyka especially for this concert, presenting Thomas Gansch as a composer and multi-instrumental soloist, but also as an amiable &#x27;enfant terrible&#x27;. One thing is certain: the wonderful musicians of the ZJO will provide some musical surprises. It is also certain that the band and the audience will experience an unforgettable evening.

The Marie Krüttli Trio impresses, is exciting, colourful and daring. With a mature tone, clear aesthetics and beguiling virtuosity, the Swiss woman manoeuvres herself and her band colleagues through intricate rhythms and interwoven chains of chords. The melodies shimmer groovily, the players appear charming and with a lot of enigmatic wit, always deeply rooted in the European piano tradition and influenced by the sound ideals of Stravinsky and Debussy.

Evelinn Trouble, known for her creative restlessness, her virtuoso voice and her idiosyncratic songwriting has added an exciting pop work to her discography with &quot;Longing Fever&quot; - a break with her psychedelic era but still unmistakably Trouble. It&#x27;s an exciting album that traverses highs and lows with fervour, ranging from Beatlesque love songs to euphoric melodies buoyed by distorted hip-hop. Unexpectedly, new sounds of string instruments join the otherwise dark sound universe of the singer: a string trio expands the band to the &quot;Evelinn Trouble Orchestra&quot;.

Avishai Cohen & Yonathan Avishai Duo

Two of Israel’s most prominent jazz musicians finally perform in a duo. The trumpeter Avishai Cohen is known for his skillful improvisation which reminds of Jazz legends such as Don Cherry, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. The pianist Yonathan Avishai made a name for himself with his lyrical, minimalistic playing. In Moods they play pieces from their new album «Playing The Room», also own compositions and improvisations over melodies by Duke Ellington, Abdullah Ibrahim, Milt Jackson and Stevie Wonder.

Yumi Ito is not only a distinguished musician, but also an independent composer and singer who moves weightlessly and at the same time competently between jazz, art-pop, electronica, free improvisation and neo-classical music, generating a sound that comes across as fresh and often surprising. The musician, composer and arranger with Polish and Japanese roots navigates through the musical fields with concentration and precision, unwaveringly following her own path. Ed Partyka arranges the guest singer&#x27;s compositions for the Zurich Jazz Orchestra and its soloists. The music comes mainly from Yumi Ito&#x27;s critically acclaimed albums &quot;Stardust Crystals&quot; and &quot;Ekual&quot;.
