«A silent film classic with a live musical accompaniment by the cult duo from Zurich.»
The origins of silhouette film can be traced back to the venerable art of Chinese shadow theater, which dates back over 2,000 years. In this art form, transparent, two-dimensional figures are moved in front of a light source positioned directly behind a screen, causing their outlines to be projected onto the screen’s surface. It is, therefore, only a short step from shadow theater to the theater of light. The pioneers of early animated film made use of this technique and adapted it to the art of animation. With this first feature-length animated film in cinematic history, Lotte Reiniger has secured a permanent place in the history of animation.
The music of the Swiss-Japanese electro duo Tim & Puma Mimi can be heard in the Hollywood remake of “Ghost in the Shell” and the Netflix series “Good Girls,” among others. Their latest, fifth album, “More or Less Tim & Puma Mimi,” draws inspiration from Cibo Matto, Yaeji, Stereo Total, Deerhoof, and Knarf Rellöm—and combines electro with trip-hop and glitchpop. Using their synthesizer, the Fruitilyzer, they coax sounds from fruits and vegetables and sometimes even play on their partner’s electrically charged body. No wonder Boris Blank of Yello is among their fans.
