Yumi Ito, a Swiss singer with Polish-Japanese roots, moves effortlessly between genres and her roles as singer, pianist, composer and improviser. She has performed twice with the ZJO, and Ed Partyka is very much looking forward to arranging some of Yumi&#x27;s brand new compositions. Back in 2009, their fresh rock/post-rock electronic sound, described as euphoric, holistic, spacey, and raucous quickly catapulted the Jordanian-Palestinian band from Amman to massive success; an artistic journey that saw them become one of the leading socially and politically outspoken bands reviving the Arab independent music scene. El Morabba3 broke cultural barriers and appealed to a generation of hunger-stricken fans living in an unstable and restless region, as they craved a new sound; one that expressed the thoughts, concerns, and anger of the people towards the realities they are living today. Today, Muhammad Abdulla and Basel Naouri live in Berlin, they have restructured the band and take El Morabba3&#x27;s earlier aesthetic evolution into a new direction. Departing from the raw post-rock energy of the first album and the polished instrumental/electronic fervor of the second, the artists have taken a deep dive into experimentation with electronic tunes and storytelling.

Σtella has actually become one of Greece&#x27;s most popular indie stars with her reduced synth sounds. Actually. Her album Up and Away was first released in 2022 on the legendary Sub Pop label, and the Athens-based painter, visual artist and performer sounds completely different on it. During the recording process, she rediscovered her parents&#x27; record collection from the 50s and 60s full of Greek folk-pop artists and now presents vintage pop poems about the agonies and raptures of love. With a honeyed voice, accompanied by bouzouki and zither alongside drums and bass, Σtella sings of consuming affairs and deeper relationships. Like a storyteller, she builds a bridge between past and present. You can literally hear the crackling of the records on her grandfather&#x27;s gramophone. The changeable Σtella is enchanting.

With various Korean instruments (Daegeum, Saenghwang, Ajaeng, Gayageum and Korean percussion) and powerful vocals based on folk traditions, ADG7 creates a blend of Korean pop and funk with cheerful and humorous elements. The ensemble consists of six musicians and three powerhouse folk singers. Their repertoire is influenced by rituals of shamanistic music (Gut) and the Korean folk song tradition (Minyo) from the Hwanghae region (now a western province in North Korea). ADG7 was formed in 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea&#x27;s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Their music expresses the meaning of liberation and South Korea&#x27;s desire for reunification. ADG7 has received numerous awards and performed at international festivals including WOMEX 2019, Global FEST 2020, Glastonbury and Roskilde.

Simon Grab – Videoex im Walcheturm

Fractura is a transdisciplinary investigation that originates from the sound world of the artist Simon Grab. It explores the creation of a collapsed ecosystem through changes, discontinuities and ruptures. The piece is inspired by the destruction of ecosystems caused by the extractivist capitalist system, specifically focusing on the oil extraction process called Fracking. This method, illegal in many countries worldwide, is currently in use in Argentina, particularly in the Vaca Muerta formation located in the province of Neuquén. It has direct effects on biota and the population, causing precarious living conditions immersed in these new anthropogenic landscapes. Through Simon’s raw sounds, Fractura creates a dystopia, a space where a rupture occurs in the natural balance, in temporal frameworks, a system failure opening an energetic channel to a liminal space where life becomes toxic. A creature explores this new space, either framed by the screen or projecting itself within it. The combination of these diverse materialities translates into a choreography of pulsating forces struggling between connection and disconnection, synchrony and desynchronization, creating the complexity and dynamism of this new world. Abate Berihun is a prolific saxophonist, composer and vocalist, a prominent Ethiopian musicians, who has toured and collaborated with musical giants such as Mulatu Astatke, Mahmoud Ahmed and Gigi. He is also the founder and leader of influential afro-jazz and ethnic ensembles “Tezeta”, “Ras Dashen” and “Kuluma”. Addis Ken – አዲስ ቀን (“New Day” in Amharic) – is the new musical project of Abate Berihun and pianist Roy Mor, and it is all about soulful groove, spiritual search and heartfelt blues. Along with bassist David Michaeli and drummer Amir Bar Akiva, the group brings to the stage original music that fuses Jewish-Ethiopian soul music and prayers passed through the generations with ageless spiritual and mysterious texts. The result is “a thrilling encounter between ancient Ethiopian traditions and the legacy of a modern jazz ensemble, steeped in musical adventurousness, deep groove, and the spirit of the blues.” The group has performed internationally in clubs and festivals in Denmark, Panama and Canada, as well as at the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat and at the international Jerusalem Jazz Festival; and in 2020, they won the Israeli Ministry of Culture’s highest artistic grant. The Grammy-nominated vocals of this French-born singer shine with elegance and clarity, energetic optimism and razor-sharp scat. Cyrille Aimée has lived a life of improvisation: As a young woman, she sang in traveller people&#x27;s camps in her homeland and on street corners across Europe; today, she delights audiences at the world&#x27;s most prestigious jazz festivals and performs on Broadway. Her latest album &#x27;à Fleur de Peau&#x27;, which she will be presenting on this tour will be released on 8th March 2024.

We already know at least two of the musicians from other formations: Saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist Tamar Osborn was the leader of the band Collocutor, Eddie Wakili-Hicks was the drummer and producer of Sons of Kemet and Wojtek Mazolewski is a celebrated bassist from Poland. Together they create a very unique sound, with quiet soundscapes evolving into groovy and extremely powerful passages.

Melodious and accessible: jazz trumpeter Nolan Quinn from Ticino plays catchy melodies and brings out the most diverse tone colours from the trumpet, whereby his sound never loses its warmth and softness. The Nolan Quinn Quintet plays jazz that sometimes takes a trip to hard bop, Broadway music or the blues. Simple compositions form the basis, which are further developed live by the improvisational power and spontaneity of the musicians around Nolan Quinn.  

José James presents 1978

José James is the epitome of modern jazz, but it almost came to nothing: The singer used to be an ardent supporter of hip-hop. It was only later that he worked his way through Nat King Cole to John Coltrane until he created his incomparable blend of jazz, soul, drum&#x27;n&#x27;bass and spoken word. Soulful trees are now growing on this soil, where the New York style chameleon with the fine voice can let off steam – and is difficult to capture!

Riff Cohen combines her Tunisian and Algerian heritage with her Israeli identity to create music that transcends cultural boundaries. With the release of her debut album A Paris (2010), which was created during an artist residency in the French capital, she laid the foundation for an international career that led to collaborations with Enrico Macias and Goran Bregović. She sings in Hebrew, Arabic, French and English; her music is characterized by Persian, Turkish, Iraqi, Moroccan, Algerian and Berber influences as well as elements of Israeli oriental music of the 90s. Riff Cohen uses the platform she is given as an artist to build a bridge between different cultures through music.

Mongolian singer Enji first came into contact with jazz at the Goethe-Institut in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. She later studied jazz singing in her adopted home of Munich, where she now also realized her new album Ulaan (2023). The reactions to the album were overwhelming: #1 in the Washington Post, Best Jazz Albums of 2023 in the New York Times and hhv-mag. This spring, singer Enji will be touring Europe for the first time as a trio with guitarist Paul Brändle and River Adomeit on double bass: sensitive chamber jazz that meets the folklore of Mongolia.

Welcome to Agadez, the capital of Saharan rock! With her dynamic repertoire of hypnotic solos and sun-bleached melodies, Etran de L&#x27;Aïr has earned themself a permanent place in the guitar music of Agadez. While other Tuareg guitarists are oriented towards western rock, Etran de L&#x27;Aïr plays a pan-African style that is typical of their home town and quotes a variety of cultural influences: from northern Malian blues to Hausa bar bands to Congolese soukous. The music evokes the exuberance of a wedding in Agadez, with an overwhelming abundance of guitars, while simultaneous solos sweep over each other playfully and with restrained precision; powerful but never exuberant. The band Anna &amp; Stoffner with Membrez and Mantel captivates with a highly energetic interplay of virtuoso musicians and urgent, unsparing lyrics. Rapper Anna Frey and guitarist Flo Stoffner, with Vincent Membrez on synthesizers and Lukas Mantel on drums, develop an intensity that is hard to resist. «Less than little is nothing, but little is more than nothing, little makes a difference.» This band is not afraid of the void and does not cover it up, but faces it, follows it and thus develops its own language, with driving grooves, poppy melodies, free improvisation, idiosyncratic guitars and dark, engaging basses. Rapper Anna Frey moves over this musical diversity with her poetic lyrics. Sometimes in singsong, sometimes in harsh phrasing. Always in search of the immediate expression.

The four musicians, rooted in the Zurich jazz scene, have known each other for over 20 years and play together not only as permanent members of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, but also in a variety of other formations. As co-leader of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, trumpeter and flugelhorn player Daniel Schenker is a central figure in the Zurich jazz scene. Rafael Schilt is as versatile as he is inspired - his compositions borrow elements from pop and modern dance music as well as from free contemporary improvisation - and his stage partners include Nils Wogram, Norbert Pfammatter, Colin Vallon, Bänz Oester and Kurz Rosenwinkel, to name but a few.

Os Barbapapas

Imagine Fela Kuti jamming in an bar in a nameless, global metropolis with Martin Denny, but it is on glass harp… While this might sound like a sensationalist figment of an over-heated music journalist’s brain, it is not too far from what Os Barbapapas are able to achieve. The band from the music metropolis of Sao Paulo is named after the iconic but weird cartoon series from the 1970s. And the band members are just as amorphous and shapeshifting as the characters in the series: they learned gnawa in Morocco, have performed in circuses and built various instruments of their own. On their new album, appropriately named Enigma, the original seed of Os Barbapapas&#x27; global underground vibes comes to full bloom.

Akutuk Origins

Moods Summer Special in der Barfussbar

Akutuk is a percussion technique from Cameroon: water is used as an instrument, played with bare hands and accompanied by singing. It is an exclusively female practice that is passed down from woman to woman over generations. The Akutuk Origins project aims to revive this almost lost cultural heritage and make it visible in public spaces. A hypnotic but surprisingly versatile sound that will unfold its full power in the wonderful setting of the Barfussbar. Supported by the Südkulturfonds. Band-it Weekend

Band-it enables young bands and musicians to present themselves to a larger audience and a jury under professional conditions. In June, they show their skills at six qualifications throughout the canton of Zurich. Indie rock, German pop, Balkan sound, singer/songwriter, hip hop and punk: since 1989, over 1600 bands from all musical genres have taken part in this Newcomer Band Festival. For many of these young talents, Band-it has been a launch pad to great success, such as Faber, Evelinn Trouble, Pablo Infernal and Sebass. Admission is free. A project of Migros Kulturprozent and the Education Department of the Canton of Zurich.

The trio performs Montgomery&#x27;s own compositions as well as other pieces typical of him and arranges them in a very personal way, without ever forgetting the original sound.

What an anniversary! In the year of his 80th birthday, Marcos Valle is also celebrating sixty years on stage. The Brazilian composer, producer, songwriter and musician belongs to the second generation of bossa nova and his 1998 album Nova Bossa Nova became a model for Brazilian electro and contemporary Brazilian jazz. Look forward to a danceable concert full of Brazilian rhythms, from samba and bossa nova to psychedelic Música Popular Brasileria, enriched with jazz improvisations, funk and disco rhythms. And last but not least, hits like &#x27;Summer Samba&#x27; and &#x27;Estrelar&#x27; that will catapult you straight into that beach holiday feeling.

Brushy One String

One man, one guitar, one string: that&#x27;s enough for the Jamaican singer to create an entire musical universe. Since his portraits in the award-winning film documentaries RiseUp and The King of One String, thousands of amazed listeners have succumbed to the charm of his songs; whether he is performing unplugged at a market in Jamaica, at New Orleans &amp; Heritage or at Global Fest in New York in front of a large audience. With a unique personality and his raw yet grandiose style, he immediately captivates the audience and skillfully uses his charismatic baritone voice combined with hypnotic, bouncy grooves on his one-string acoustic guitar.

Amsterdam Klezmer Band

The name says it all: the Amsterdam Klezmer Band plays klezmer and adds a pinch of jazz, Balkan or gypsy to the mix. The band started out as a group of street musicians in 1996 and has played countless live shows since then. In February 2024, they released their twentieth album &quot;Bomba Pop&quot;, which was produced by Ulf Lindemann aka Dunkelbunt. The sound on it is as we know it and yet it is so much more: beats that range from dub to hip-hop to dance music also like to sneak in. A danceable journey around the world!

La Sonora Mazurén

La Sonora Mazurén are the latest representatives of Bogotá&#x27;s lively alternative music scene. The seven musicians are influenced by traditional rhythms and sounds from Ecuador, Colombia and Peru and enrich them with synths and electric guitar. This is how they have developed their very own sound, which can be described as trippy cumbia, psychedelic chicha or African fuzz. A must for lovers of bands like the Meridian Brothers and for anyone curious to discover the new Tropsychedelica sound of Colombia.

Benin International Musical

The Benin International Musical combines traditional rhythms and songs from the voodoo culture with electronic melodies, trip-hop grooves, hip-hop and rock from Benin&#x27;s trendy club scene. With their project, the collective aims to revive the diverse musical heritage of their ancestors and make it accessible to a wide audience. The traditional voodoo culture, which was spread in the wake of slavery, may be unknown to many, but it laid the foundations for musical movements such as jazz, blues, salsa and hip-hop. A groovy homage to a rich cultural history!

Jasmine Myra is a saxophonist, composer and bandleader from Leeds and is part of the city&#x27;s vibrant, creative and cross-genre music scene, which is bursting with young talent. Her euphoric and uplifting sound draws influences from Bonobo, Ólafur Arnalds and Kenny Wheeler, artists whose music shares an emotive quality that you can also hear in Myra’s own compositions.

Andrea Bignasca, a musician from the south of Switzerland with a warm and welcoming voice, has been playing his way into the hearts of an ever-growing audience over the past few years. Since the release of his debut album &quot;Gone&quot; in 2015, Andrea Bignasca has given over 200 concerts in Switzerland, performed at major Swiss festivals and supported artists such as Everlast, Morcheeba and Gregory Porter. The songwriter&#x27;s fourth album &quot;Stranger&quot; will be released in October 2024. It tells stories of creating and writing songs, of creating life, of fatherhood and love; and of the fears, doubts and joys that all these things bring.

Tonight with Jools Holland - the British music legend returns! The multi-talent became known in 1974 with the new wave formation Squeeze, and since 1992 he has hosted the successful music show &quot;Later... with Jools Holland&quot; on BBC, while also touring with his own boogie-woogie, R&#x27;n&#x27;B and pop program. He is always accompanied by a top-class line-up. This year he will be supported by the Jamaican R&#x27;n&#x27;B voice Ruby Turner.

The lower floor of the club is at ground level and accessible without steps. There is one accessible bathroom which can be used with a Eurokey. The bar is not accessible and is approximately 1.20 metres high.

Moods is reached via the main entrance of the Schiffbau at Schiffbauplatz. We recommend arriving by public transport (streetcar 4 or 8 / bus 72, 83 or 33 to Schiffbau; S-Bahn to Hardbrücke station and from there approx. 2 minutes on foot).

Haïdouti Orkestar is a fiery brass band with a powerful rhythm section, hot accordeon and sultry voices at the forefront. The Paris-based band, with musicians* from France, Greece, Turkey, Romania and Serbia, has been exploring the musical heritage of the Balkans, Turkey, the Middle East and beyond for 14 years. In their latest album, Yuh Yuh, released this April, they show up more in concert than in party mood, singing about joy as well as suffering, exploitative politics, anger and hope. The Haidouti Orkestra is a human and musical adventure that prides itself on representing France in its diversity. In the fight against hate speech and cultural isolationism, the band does not want to build walls - on the contrary, they prefer to dance over them.

Malika Tirolien

From Guadeloupe, Grammy nominated vocalist, songwriter and producer Malika Tirolien is an explosive mix of creativity, dedication and genuineness. Her love, passion and respect for music can be felt in the sparkling authenticity of her performances in which her soaring voice immediately grabs your attention and her well-crafted compositions present effusive emotions through conscious and engaged lyrics. Montreal based, she has been garnering international attention for almost a decade, striking with her electrifying performance on “Iʼm not the one”, a prime track on the Grammy-winning album “Family Dinner” by Snarky Puppy that has been inspiring countless covers worldwide. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Siselabonga

Siselabonga are back with a new EP called &#x27;In Stone&#x27;. This time, South African singer-songwriter Nongoma takes the mic as the group moves through a kaleidoscopic mix of acoustic and electronic sounds. The rhythmic foundation is West African to the core, with selected elements of hip-hop, soul, Afrobeats and electro-pop thrown in for good measure. Lively, sensual and transcendent. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Together they create an unmistakable, infectious big band sound with influences from jazz, hip hop, Afrobeat, Latin, soul, reggae and dance music – a captivating, powerful musical experience.

Adi Oasis

Hailing from the French Caribbean and living in Brooklyn, Adi Oasis is currently taking the music world by storm. Since launching her solo career in 2018, she has performed with Anderson .Paak, Gregory Porter, JUNGLE, Masego, Thundercat, appeared at festivals such as the Newport Jazz Fest, Love Supreme or Montreux Jazz Festival and the stream of rave reviews just won&#x27;t dry up. On her debut album &quot;Lotus Glow&quot;, released in 2023, Adi Oasis combines her retro-futuristic signature sound, her soaring voice and her spectacular bass playing to create a very personal and political work that particularly reflects the reality of her life as a Black female immigrant in America. &quot;Lotus Glow represents the flower I&#x27;ve blossomed into, the artist I&#x27;ve worked on becoming all my life. The glow is where I am going next. It&#x27;s my destiny.&quot;

Album Release «evolving»

The newly formed 10-piece ensemble MetaLogue, led by singer Nina Reiter, is reviving the music of Lucerne composer Mani Planzer, who died in 1997 and was almost forgotten. As a musician, composer, organist, teacher, choirmaster and big band leader, Planzer had a decisive influence on the cultural landscape of Central Switzerland. He was awarded the Lucerne City Prize for Art and Culture in 1981 and the Lucerne Living Space Prize posthumously in 1998. The band name &quot;MetaLogue&quot; refers to Planzer&#x27;s penchant for wordplay and symbolises the symbiosis of the various elements that come together in this project. On the one hand, it is the young musicians who bring Planzer&#x27;s music into the light of the present and allow the audience to participate in a musical dialogue that takes place far away from the mainstream. On the other hand, it is the lyrics of singer Nina Reiter, who picks up on Planzer&#x27;s pioneering spirit in the synthesis of jazz and poetry, thus creating a meta-level to the previously instrumental compositions. On the occasion of the upcoming anniversary – Planzer would have celebrated his 85th birthday in 2024 – the Mani Planzer Big Band and the MorschAchBlasorCHester will pay tribute to the musical bridge-builder, trailblazer and pioneer with works arranged by Nina Reiter.
