Labess is a journey. It begins in Algeria, in the working-class district of Hussein-Dey, where Nedjim Bouizzoul grows up surrounded by chaabi music. He emigrated to Quebec with his family and earned his living as a street musician and with small gigs in cafés. His first collaborations eventually led to the group Labess (which translates to “all is well”) and the debut album Tout va bien (2007). The music is open to all directions: African elements are combined with gypsy rumba and flamenco, always accompanied by chaabi. The Arabic, French and Spanish lyrics mix realism and hope, gentleness and anger. They tell of exile, of the joys and sorrows that accompany the journey from the homeland to the host country. A poetic reflection on cultural diversity and the need to unite everyone, regardless of our differences.

Before and after the concert, DJ Emina will play a suitable mix of danceable tracks.
