Over the course of two days, harpist Marina Mello and singer Luca Pilu Koch will join forces to present a festival of words and sound. In this interview, Luca Pilu Koch explains how this collaboration came about, what "worlbuzzpoems" actually are, and what the audience can look forward to.

How did your paths lead you to each other?
Marina and I keep crossing paths. Whether that's in Zurich's independent music scene or when rooms become available in shared apartments. We’ve played together a few times and have often come close to moving in together. So it’s hardly surprising that we both became Carte Blanche artists at the same time! Believe in fate or not! We’ve now seized this opportunity to strengthen our collaboration.
How would you describe your artistic work? What defines it? In which areas might it overlap, and what sets you apart?
For both of us, sound and improvisation are our top priorities; furthermore, through our exchanges, we’ve discovered that we’re both deeply engaged with text. Marina writes in Brazilian Portuguese and I write in German and English. It was therefore only natural that we wanted to curate a two-day festival where words merge into sound and sound into words. We also share a similar sensibility regarding how dense or light the music we create should be.
What fascinates you about your chosen instrument or medium? What about the other person’s medium?
Marina and I still clearly remember our first evening together at the WIM (Werkstatt für improvisierte Musik), when we were both on stage and connected immediately. She told me she was impressed by my stage presence and the joy I brought to my vocal performance. Likewise, I was deeply impressed by Marina’s harp repertoire. She imbues her instrument, which symbolises all that is beautiful, with such depth and darkness. It’s a combination that really draws me in!
What are you most looking forward to?
The two Moods evenings will be a surprise for everyone involved, because the ensembles we’ve put together will be meeting for the first time. We do have a general plan for the evenings, but we won't know what detours and shortcuts we'll take until we start playing together.
What were your ideas behind the programme?
I often find myself in situations where everything around me feels like an earthquake or a boiling cauldron. I feel overwhelmed by the current state of the world, as if I were sitting in a pressure cooker hoping that no one will lift the lid!
We want to acknowledge these feelings and let off some steam before things explode. The pieces performed each evening are based on my 'worlbuzzpoems' – poems intended to capture that great hum. However, these poems aren’t meant to dictate the music, merely to set it in motion. You invited guest musicians. Why did you choose them?
The selection process was actually very straightforward for us. We took the opportunity to invite the musicians we admire. We also made sure that they were already familiar with one another. This meant that we could blend together musically from the outset. Each musician brings their own unique style, which complements Marina’s harp playing and my singing beautifully.
What message would you like to convey to the audience during these evenings?
We firmly believe that sharing a musical experience can be cathartic. It's about working through emotions together, facing new challenges, feeling overwhelmed and allowing yourself to be carried along. These evenings are an invitation to do all of that – for everyone, as much and as deeply as necessary and possible!
