"Make Things Happen" A surprisingly optimistic title for a rather melancholy album. But perhaps this is due to the fundamental ambivalence of melancholy: facing the future with your back to the direction of travel, with everything you have left behind still in sight. Or perhaps it is this rather Scandinavian sound aesthetic that characterises the new album by Swiss saxophonist and woodwind generalist Marcel Lüscher.

Lüscher is a stranger to muscle-flexing, exhibited virtuosity. It is all about shaping the sound and the creative search for the supporting melody. The fact that virtuosity also plays a role here can be heard in Lüscher's tone - whether on the saxophone, clarinet or bass clarinet - with every note. The gentle exhalation of the past, the energetic and open shouting and hissing towards the new. An arrangement with depth and immediacy.
In the quartet, this concept is perfectly cast: Lüscher's brother Thomas tends towards impressionistic soundscapes in his interplay with drummer Kaspar Rast, who has landed from the Nik-Bärtsch orbit, while Björn Meyer sometimes understands his six-string electric bass as a lowered guitar, but can also push forward violently - even violently funky - from the depths of the room.

Flowers bow their heads, a summer ends somewhere, the following spring is cancelled, and the tulips pay for too much sunlight with black wilt. In the midst of it all, old friends (a wonderful Simon and Garfunkel cover) sit side by side on a park bench like the spines of books.
