Louis Matute grew up in Geneva. However, the Latin American touch hinted at in his name has accompanied him throughout his life. His travels have taken him to Spain, Cuba, Costa Rica, Honduras and most recently to Brazil, where he completed &quot;Dolce Vita&quot; with the voices of Joyce Moreno and Dora Morelenbaum. The new tracks on the new album shine thanks to Nathan Vandenbulcke&#x27;s outstanding drumming, Zacharie Ksyk&#x27;s energetic trumpet solos and Léon Phal&#x27;s sensual tenor saxophone solos, supported by double bassist Virgile Rosselet and the enormous versatility of pianist Andrew Audiger. At the same time, one recognises Louis Matute&#x27;s sensitive signature, the touching melodies, the special sound of the trumpet and tenor saxophone, and the guitarist, whose rare solos are all the more effective. Louis Matute is more than just a musician – he is a curious, committed personality whose style is recognisable after just a few bars. Louis Matute and his large ensemble open doors and windows, travel, tell stories, find healing in humanity and resilience – and use this to create music that touches the personal and appeals to the universal. And perhaps we can take &quot;Dolce Vita&quot; quite literally after all?

For over two decades, Matt Johnson has been a key member of Jamiroquai, playing keyboards and co-writing most of the band’s material during that time. He also co-produced their last album &quot;Automaton&quot;. He has become legendary among keyboard players for his unique style, blending funk, acid jazz and electronica. He also hosts a popular YouTubechannel dedicated to all things keys which has over 140,000 subscribers. As well as Jamiroquai, Matt has written and performed on many artist’s records including Dizzee Rascal, Duﬀy, Ashanti, Lizzo, Purple Disco Machine, Nolwenn Leroy, Lucky Daye, Newton Faulkner and many more. In 2025, Matt joined the prestigious Parisian Label Naïve to release his 2nd Solo album &quot;Warrior Princess&quot;, a gorgeous retro sounding record inspired by the modern activisit and heroine Greta Thunberg. Marta Pereira da Costa is an instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader who masterfully plays the Portuguese guitar. She broke tradition in a field historically dominated by men, becoming the first woman to play the Portuguese guitar professionally in Fado. In 2014, she received the Instrumentalist Award from the Amália Rodrigues Foundation, and in 2016, she released her self-titled debut album with Warner Music Portugal, featuring renowned artists such as Rui Veloso, Dulce Pontes, Camané, Richard Bona, and Tara Tiba. Since then, she has performed on prestigious stages including the Kennedy Center and the Lincoln Center, and her Tiny Desk NPR (2023) performance has surpassed one million views. More recently, she was honored with the Voz do Operário Composition Award (2024) and the Best Instrumental Award at the IPMA Awards (2025). Throughout her career, Marta has taken her music across five continents, performing in countries such as Australia, Brazil, the United States, China, India, Indonesia, Spain, France among many others—establishing herself as one of the leading ambassadors of Portuguese sound worldwide. Her current project transcends borders, presenting the Portuguese guitar as a voice that travels through the traditional sounds of Fado and Portuguese music while also exploring new musical landscapes such as jazz, Cape Verdean morna, Brazilian choro, and world music. Performing in trio format, Marta will be joined by João José Pita Junior on seven-string guitar and Carlos Miguel Antunes on percussion. Together, they will perform pieces from her new album Sem Palavras, such as Verdes Anos, Summertime, Dia de Feira as well as from her debut album (Terra, Encontro, and Fado Lopes). The audience will be invited on a journey of sounds and emotions, where the Portuguese guitar takes center stage—guided by Marta’s sensitivity, intensity, and elegance—for a performance that promises to be as powerful as it is unforgettable.

In the «Voice Laboratory» concert, the three singers Dalia Donadio, Laura Kull and Lena Kiepenheuercome together to showcase the defining features of their vocal work, including melodies, lyrics and fragments. Quotations stand alongside vocalisations and spoken narratives alongside melismatic loops. The voice takes on different roles: it is a reflective authority, an echo, a high priestess and an improvised draft. Alongside musicians Moreno Donadio, Marc Méan, Tobias Meier and Jonas Ruther, they create a collage of their own and collective memories. --- In «The Voice Laboratory», singer Dalia Donadio explores the human voice as a cultural, social, and energetic phenomenon. Taking a circular approach to a phenomenon that eludes definitive capture, the focus is on an experimental exploration of what voice could be. «The Voice Laboratory» is a vessel for intensive craftsmanship, with a particular focus on the intersection between scientific voice physiology research and personal sound work experience. Moving beyond feel-good rhetoric and esoteric idealisation, the voice is examined, transformed and celebrated in all its complexity. Through collaboration with musicians and artists specialising in performance, photography, film and digital art, among others, Dalia Donadio creates an exhibition, as well as performances, workshops, and concerts.

SOYUZ (СОЮЗ)

Album Release

The creative collective SOYUZ from Minsk, Belarus consists of multi-instrumentalists Alex Chumak and Mikita Arlou. Since 2022, when they moved to Warsaw, Poland, drummer Albert Karch and guitarist Igor Wiśniewski have also joined the collective. The great thing about SOYUZ is that they are two bands in one. In the studio, Chumak acts as composer, arranger, and artistic director, creating carefully crafted recordings that blend jazz, folk, global pop traditions, and lush orchestration. On stage, however, SOYUZ becomes a live quartet. Improvisation and the unique voice of each member reshape the songs, often surprising the audience and the band itself. At Moods, SOYUZ will present their latest album, KROK (English: Step), which was released in October 2025 on Mr. Bongo. It is the collective&#x27;s first album composed almost entirely in Belarusian, weaving their Eastern European roots with jazz, folk, and global influences.

With &quot;Living Being IV: Time Reflections&quot;, Vincent Peirani and his quintet present a work deeply rooted in musical reflection and exploration of time. The new project, featuring Émile Parisien, Tony Paeleman, Yoann Serra and Julien Herné, invites listeners on a sonic journey in which every note is imbued with the complexity and nuances of the rhythm of life. Created in the unique context of the first months of the Covid pandemic, this album is the result of a moment of forced pause for Vincent Peirani, a break in his daily routine that led him to meditate on how time shapes our lives and our perception of the world. &quot;Time Réflections&quot; is thus a mosaic in which the contemporary pulse and the echoes of traditional dances intersect, with a strong nod to baroque music, which finds an unexpected and poetic place here.

25 Jahre JazzBaragge Birthday Jam

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Karin Meier

Karin Meier returns to continue her many years of great collaboration with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. In addition to Karin&#x27;s own compositions, the program will also include new interpretations of jazz standards and pop classics, all arranged for the ZJO by Ed Partyka. The orchestra will perform with an expanded line-up, including French horn, tuba and a whole range of woodwind instruments to give the music additional textures and timbres. The orchestra will also play instrumental music by Ed Partyka, including the continuation and further development of the composition written for the orchestra&#x27;s 30th anniversary. The first movement of the work, There Will Be Another You, was premiered on October 2, and the piece will continue to evolve and grow until May 2026. As always, both the instrumental and vocal arrangements will be performed by the Zurich Jazz Orchestra&#x27;s outstanding soloists.

20 Years of Palko! and still dirty

Somewhere between Kharkiv and Porto, Malmö and Napoli, in a filthy rehearsal room with lots of booze and tears, a couple of guys who had just broken up a band receive a visit from Palko! Palko! was a traveler, a vision that inspired the founding members from then on. Palko! loved the music passed down by word of mouth and the freedom and melancholy of the Cossacks. The loud and pounding beat was his best friend and constantly drove him to dance. The band mixed the substance of this genius with rock and punk, and over the years this unique mix grew into over 100 songs. There is probably no human constitution that is not experienced at and during a Palko!Muski concert: glasses are thrown against the wall, bodily fluids are exchanged; ecstasy and catharsis are lived out. Knocked-out teeth, tears of joy, euphoria to anger, despair and hope, a rush of emotions in a frenzy. Couples come together and separate, children are conceived and born.

Tropikaos - Carnaval Adalu invites you on a journey through the sounds, sights and culture of Brazilian carnival, where people revel in colorful, harmonious chaos at the world&#x27;s biggest street parties. The city of Zurich loves Brazilian rhythms, which is why we have brought together percussion groups to perform at the same tempo. Led by the talented musician Juninho Ibituruna, these groups will open our carnival party in the foyer of the Schiffbau. Similar to a traditional “Bloco de Rua,” we are bringing together the groups Borumbaia, Zurich School of Samba, and Pandeiro LX.

Coletivo Gira

Women unite their voices, their instruments and their love of samba in a performance that revives the great samba classics, but also presents the samba of the new generation, always highlighting the work of other women, whether as composers or performers. The focus of the concert is on samba and other Afro-Brazilian rhythms from the Samba de Terreiro. The sound of the hand drums (ilú and conga) is present in most of the arrangements, giving them an original sound identity without forgetting the roots. The group is made up of multi-instrumentalists from different parts of Brazil and the world, who bring their idiosyncrasies and influences, resulting in a unique performance full of power but also lightness, without neglecting the activism and resistance of women who are still fighting for greater representation in samba.

Meshell Ndegeocello has survived the best and worst of what a career in music has to offer. She eschewed genre for originality, celebrity for longevity, and musical trends for musical truths. Fans have come to expect the unexpected and follow her on sojourns into soul, R&amp;B, jazz, hip-hop, rock, all bound by the search for love, justice, respect, and resolution. Those sonic investigations have defied and redefined the expectations for women and queer artists for over 30 years and she remains one of few persons who write the music, sing the songs, and lead the band. A bass player above all else, Meshell brings her warm, fat, and melodic groove to everything she does and is often seen as the pioneer of the so-called Neo Soul movement alongside The Soulquarians or Maxwell. Following her acclaimed Blue Note debut in 2023 with &quot;The Omnichord Real Book&quot;, Meshell returns with &quot;No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin&quot;, released in Summer 2024.

«Zugzwang» (Uraufführung)

Decisions must be made within a network of feedback loops whose course is only partially predictable, acting under conditions of limited control. Zugzwang is an electroacoustic ensemble composition by Tomas Korber, created as part of the City of Zurich&#x27;s 2025 Work Year programme. The ensemble combines acoustic instruments with a network of microphones, software, and feedback loops. The result is music with extreme registers and strong dynamic contrasts, characterised by an archaic, raw sound. The repetitive and process-oriented nature of the music causes listeners and musicians to enter a trance-like state in which time seems to stretch infinitely. Thus, Zugzwang examines the interplay between individual decision-making, collective processes, and the momentum of an unstable system. For twenty years, the Swiss-Georgian festival Close Encounters has promoted encounters and collaborations, providing spaces for experimentation and reflection. It facilitates intensive exchange between participating musicians, transcending geographical distances, scenes and styles. In both Switzerland and Georgia, Close Encounters continues to break down institutional, stylistic and scene-related boundaries, connecting a diverse range of audiences.

An Experimental Electroacoustic Opera

Homo Freq: An Experimental Electroacoustic Opera is more than just a mini opera. It is a platform for experimentation, a space in which opera, the old and immovable monster, is translated and reimagined. Created in collaboration with Nasi Chavchavadze and Lisa Kereselidze, who like Tiko have their roots in classical music, the project is the brainchild of Georgian musician Tiko Gogoberidze. In Homo Freq, their background meets experimental practice, resulting in an experimental electroacoustic opera. The means employed range from live electronics and classical singing to free improvisation and experimental approaches, with a constantly changing libretto depending on the performers, their voices, and their perspectives. This evening, the young Zurich-based composer and musician Felix Friedrich will be joining them. Tiko Gogoberidze belongs to the next generation of the Georgian electronic and club scene. Her music ranges from technoid club music and noisy experimental projects to pop and music theatre. Her work is characterised by her openness in moving between different musical fields while always maintaining her own unique style. Not only is Tiko Gogoberidze an accomplished electronic musician, she is also a classically trained singer.

Fred Wesley Generations Trio

Fred Wesley wrote funk history alongside James Brown and George Clinton, serving as one of the genre&#x27;s architects. Now, he is starting a new chapter that connects him with his jazz roots and an exciting future: Generations. Generations is a versatile trio featuring Wesley on trombone, Leonardo Corradi on organ, and Tony Match on drums. The three musicians originally came together to pay tribute to legendary organist Jimmy Smith&#x27;s soulful jazz — and immediately found a musical chemistry that has kept them performing together to this day. However, the trio doesn&#x27;t limit itself to jazz. They groove through rap, soul, and funk together, creating a sound that is as versatile as it is rousing. Together, they elevate their groove and bring the rhythm to life.

Laura & Luzius Schuler: Mandà in Lunga

It is music of crystalline beauty, equally natural spectacle and document of a most intimate musical interaction. In the autumn and winter of 2023, Laura and Luzius Schuler travel to Val Poschiavo to listen to alpine tales. Here, siblings Laura and Luzius are confronted with the rugged mountain world and a landscape in a state of flux. In the face of this scenery, voice and instruments become mist and shadow. They pulse like the rock that surrounds them. The organ is no longer a monolith, but flexible, malleable, capable of singing, while the bow plays the wind, the light, the water. This music resembles the brushstroke of the sun, which brings the stone to life, painting it through the clouds. Recorded in the reformed church of Poschiavo, with Luzius on the church organ and Laura on violin and vocals, their album &quot;Mandà in Lunga&quot; (Ronin Rhythm Records, 2025) was recorded over in just two sessions. As if in a state of suspension we find improvised confrontations with the surrounding environment and with nature, somewhere between acoustic ambient and experimental sound art. The Kalem ensemble gives traditional Balkan music a fresh, modern sound. It consists of the two musicians Stefan Ilić (vocals/violin) and Dušan Popović Lipovac (guitar). Their joint style is the result of a finely tuned fusion of their musical influences: Dušan brings in Mediterranean and classical timbres, while Stefan is deeply rooted in traditional folk music with his authentic singing and playing style. Their third studio album Polako was recently released, which contains newly arranged traditional songs as well as four of their own compositions.

After the quiet, seated concert, you can round off the evening at the bar. Global beats are served far beyond the borders of the Balkans. With the legendary concert and party series Kultur Shock, Mario Peric is one of the pioneers of the Balkan scene as an organizer, DJ and producer. He has been thrilling audiences for many years with his varied, explosive and crazy sounds. His musical spectrum cannot be pinned down to one direction. The main thing is that it fits!

Tim &amp; Puma Mimi are back! The Swiss-Japanese electro duo, known for their techno cucumber, toothpaste flute and Skype concerts, recently even made it into the Hollywood film Ghost in the Shell. After seven years of absence aka raising children aka training interns, another baby is now here: an album with twelve tracks: &quot;More or Less Tim &amp; Puma Mimi&quot;. The play with addition and subtraction runs through the entire album. Many new signature sounds appear: a pocket operator synthesizer that looks like a pocket calculator and sounds like a Gameboy. A vocoder that opened up new possibilities for Mimi&#x27;s unique vocals. Or the KoTaMo, a mix of koto, tambura and monochord - three cultures, three bodies of sound, one instrument. What is striking about the new songs is the (supposed) lack of beats and the even stronger incorporation of Japanese music elements via flute melodies, crickets or folk songs (Aka Tombo, Ryushi), while the unique Tim &amp; Puma-Mimi quirkiness remains at all levels. - Duration of the concert 50-65 minutes - Kids of all ages are welcome. - We will keep the volume at a reasonable level, but we do recommend hearing protection for the little ones. - Children under the age of 12 can attend the concert free of charge, but we ask that they reserve a free ticket. - Teenagers between the ages of 12 and 16 pay half price. - Can&#x27;t afford a ticket? For the currents festival, Marie Krüttli presents new music as a ritual of becoming. The lyrics evoke feminine power through ancient goddesses — Amaterasu, Isis, Athena — luminous, wise, maternal, brave and fiercely protective figures of transformation. These presences mirror a journey of self-growth and love, deeply rooted in nature and its cycles. Musically, the work draws on the forward-looking sensuality and groove of Bilal’s recent creations and on Baudelaire’s poetry as set to music by Debussy, alongside the refined colors of Poulenc and Ibert. The music unfolds as an intimate, expansive soundscape where myth, care, and strength resonate.

Nika Roza Danilova has summoned electronic goth incantations as Zola Jesus (us) since 2006. She’s endlessly tinkered with her sound as a sonic auteur, and explored the inner workings of her soul by engaging with art pop, classical, and brutally industrial cold wave. For her currents festival appearance, Zola Jesus is joined by musical polymath Louise Woodward and an all-star cast of Zürich classical musicians, including the acclaimed Galatea Quartet, for a new hypnotic, tidal piece for voice, string quintet and French horn.

Every year, the students of Musikschule Konservatorium Zürich (MKZ) can have their musical progress assessed by a jury of experts as part of the Stufentest. Outstanding contributions from all seven levels are then performed in front of an audience. This year&#x27;s final concert again reflects the stylistic breadth of MKZ - from Mozart to Motörhead, played and sung by eager beginners to stage-tested near-pros. ANCESTRAL ROOTS invites people to a celebration that honors heritage and culture, living in and through the diaspora, and third culture identities through sound, storytelling or chanting, making the invitation wide, vibrant and inclusive. Holland Andrews (they/them) and yuniya edi kwon (she/her) are composer-improvisers, vocalists, and interdisciplinary performance makers based in Brooklyn, New York. Their collaborative practice is an emergent and embodied extension of their lives as ritualists, spiritual practitioners, and partners. Holland, a multi-instrumentalist and producer, arranges music for voice, clarinet, and electronics, harnessing the power of these instruments to address themes of vulnerability, catharsis, and healing. yuniya, in her work, connects sound, movement, and ceremony to explore transformation, transgression, and mythology’s ability to both obscure and reveal. Their co-created opera-in-progress &quot;How does it feel to look at nothing&quot; is a transdisciplinary space of convergence for their shared life, queer-trans family, and beloved creative lineages, grounded in the foundational questions that connect and inspire them. Separately, their work has been presented by The Whitney, REDCAT, PICA, ISSUE Project Room, Dia Art Foundation, Performa Biennial, Roulette Intermedium, Civitella Ranieri, and others. Holland and yuniya are both Guggenheim Fellows, Foundation for Contemporary Arts Awardees, Creative Capital Awardees, and United States Artists Fellows. &quot;How does it feel to look at nothing&quot; will have its world premiere in Fall 2026 before touring internationally. Curator: Kay Zhang (she/they) is a sonic artist whose work explores in-betweenness through sound, performance, curation, and research. Rooted in experimentation and learning-by-doing, their practice bridges transdisciplinary art, queer feminist theory, and sound ecologies. Kay is a founding member of Kollektiv international Totem (KIT), River Oracle, and ARKA, and is part of the curatorial team at Les Complices* in Zurich. Their work fosters collective listening, care practices, and intercultural dialogue through sound performance and curatorial experiences.

The Danish instrumental trio Antistatic creates complex soundscapes with just two guitars and drums. Their instruments intertwine effortlessly, combining percussive guitar lines and intricate polyrhythms to create hypnotic grooves that lie somewhere between post-punk and math rock. Their debut album, Relics, was released in 2024 on the renowned US label Cuneiform Records and received rave reviews worldwide. This year, the band will follow up with a new release. Antistatic is an experience, especially live. They build dynamics between controlled precision and cathartic outbursts. With their repetitive, driving rhythms, they put you in a trance, only to create new tension time and again with surprising twists.

Sc&#x27;ööf are tipped to be the next big thing in Europe. The experimental band has already won the Zenith Award from the European Jazz Network, among other accolades, and has developed its own radical sound that is refreshingly adventurous and provocative. With their fascination for strange grooves and exuberant live energy, Sc&#x27;ööf are an exciting surprise. The Swiss-based quartet consists of drums, a laptop, an electric guitar and two saxophones with electronics and sound design. Folky singer-songwriter ballads, spherically dreamy hippie worlds and synth-pop with French charm - it&#x27;s all there. This evening, the busy soundtrack composer, whose birth name is Cyril Böhler, is stepping out of the studio once again. Together with her three fellow musicians, she creates an open, multi-layered sound that combines Anatolian folk, Kurdish poetry, rock, blues and improvisational elements. Her debut album Ez Kî Me is a contemporary interpretation of Anatolian music, at times a battle cry, at others a delicate call for identity and belonging and was nominated for the Songlines Music Award and the UPBEAT Best New Talent Award 2024. With her second album Meydan she gives voice to women living on their own terms, a powerful, epic exploration of freedom, humanity and women&#x27;s strength. Musically, it adds more rhythm, groove, rock ‘n’ roll, and power, sharing stories of resistance, struggle, and solidarity in the fight for women’s rights.

Filippo Valli Quartet

The Filippo Valli Quartet presents a repertoire that combines the bandleader’s original compositions with modern interpretations of jazz standards. The band stands out for its harmonious balance between composition and improvisation, as well as for a vivid and profound musical dialogue. Valli draws inspiration from some of the most innovative voices in contemporary jazz, such as Joel Ross, Immanuel Wilkins, Braxton Cook, Marquis Hill, Joe Sanders and Joshua Redman. Artists, whose complex sonic landscapes provide fertile ground for his creativity. At the same time, it is the soul of Black music that deeply permeates his artistic vision, with blues, soul and funk becoming languages through which Valli shapes a personal and emotionally charged sound world. Following concerts with Kneebody and his sextet, as well as a featured performance with Kurt Rosenwinkel’s NEXT STEP in recent years, Wendel&#x27;s latest line-up features four leading vibraphonists. This electroacoustic project showcases a distinctive and vibrant instrumentation, exploring the intersection of chamber, classical, and minimal music within the context of contemporary jazz. With some of the biggest names in contemporary percussion, this is set to be a boundary-pushing evening both on and off stage. BaRcoDe brings together four of the most innovative voices in contemporary percussion. Joel Ross, a Blue Note recording artist, has redefined the vibraphone through acclaimed releases like KingMaker and The Parable of the Poet, and is widely regarded as one of his generation’s most expressive improvisers. Simon Moullier — praised by Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock, and known for his customized quarter-tone vibraphone — expands the instrument’s vocabulary with global idioms and electronics. Patricia Brennan is celebrated for her exploratory solo work and collaborations with avant-garde leaders like Mary Halvorson and John Zorn, using extended techniques and real-time processing to reimagine the vibraphone’s role. Some musicians play notes; others live sounds. Marco Mezquida is the latter. Born in Menorca, this pianist, improviser, and composer embodies musical passion. He is considered one of the most vibrant figures on the Spanish jazz scene. He is often described as a &quot;child prodigy,&quot; &quot;piano wizard,&quot; and &quot;magnetic.&quot; He moves effortlessly between jazz, classical, flamenco, folk, pop, and free improvisation. Among his many awards, he has been voted Musician of the Year four times by the BMW Welt Jazz Award (Audience &amp; Jury Award) and the Asociación de Músicos de Jazz y Moderna de Catalunya (Association of Jazz Musicians of Catalonia). Following the albums Letter to Milos, Talismán, and Ravel&#x27;s Dreams, Marco Mezquida will present his new album, Táctil, in spring 2026. Dominique Fils-Aimé is a rising star in vocal jazz, a Montreal singer-songwriter who puts the history of African-American musical culture into the heart of her work. She crafts her work in cycles, with each trilogy telling a unique chapter in her quest for sonic, creative, and spiritual freedom. In 2023, Dominique Fils-Aimé launched her second trilogy, a collection of introspective and intuitive works that began with «Our Roots Run Deep», which has already been celebrated at Moods. So, in February 2026, Dominique will unveil the second chapter of this cycle with a new studio album «My World Is The Sun». On this project, she focuses on the very essence of the creative process. It reflects her commitment to freedom, to the sonic, creative, and spiritual dimensions as well as her desire to create from a place of honesty and vulnerability. Rachel Eckroth Trio

Straight-ahead, modern and unmistakable. Although she tours large stadiums and festivals with St. Vincent, three-time Grammy-nominated pianist and singer Rachel Eckroth keeps her solo projects surprisingly and refreshingly traditional. In October 2025, her all-female trio, featuring bassist Emma Dayhuff and drummer Tina Raymond, released their latest EP, This Is One of Those Moments. It&#x27;s a tried-and-tested formation with a contemporary twist, and the same approach applies to her music. This is particularly evident on the new EP, which is highly lyrical: one patiently follows the melodies and rhythmic cells, watching them unfold into constantly changing, colourful, shimmering pieces. It is immediately apparent that Rachel Eckroth hears things differently to the rest of us. Her music is an evolving soundscape, full of darkness yet accessible and redeeming light.

For Theo Croker, the trumpet is just the beginning. Seamlessly blending jazz, soul, hip-hop, electronica, spoken word, and Afrofuturism, the grandson of Doc Cheatham creates a unique sound. Croker takes the language of jazz and expands it into a soundscape all his own, where improvisation meets production, beats meet brass, and history meets the present. His music thrives on dialogue with tradition, his musical roots, and the world as it sounds today. His live shows are not traditional concerts, but rather journeys through sound and mood. They are atmospheric, highly musical, and deeply connected to the moment. At Moods, he will take us on this journey with his eighth album, Dream Manifest. The evening will be a meditation on what can coexist as he experiments with acoustic, electric, and digital layers of sound. Deep grooves combine serenity and tension to form covalent bonds. Latin Night – Rompiendo La Rutina

We embark on excursions into two of the most important Latin worlds: Brazil and Cuba. We begin in Brazil, where we will hear soloists of the ZJO performing in a wide variety of rhythms such as samba, bossa nova, and frevo. The second set brings a premiere: the ZJO will perform at the Moods jazz club with the Cuban trumpet doyen Juan Munguía, who lives in Spain. At the age of 22, Munguía was brought into the band Irakere as Arturo Sandoval’s successor, where he remained for 15 years. Irakere toured the world and left its mark in Europe with concerts and albums. From 1995 to 1997, Munguía lived in Switzerland, taught here, and performed with local ensembles during that time. In addition to captivating salsa pieces, the evening will also feature arrangements with Latin American influences by Ed Partyka. We are particularly excited about the pieces arranged exclusively for the Zurich Jazz Orchestra by Munguía.

Having had some residencies in and around Zurich and still keeping up with the scene there, he’s been behind quite a few DJ booths in the past 20y, while also perfecting his skills as a selector. Jupiter Bokondji, the iconic figure from Kinshasa known as the &quot;Rebel General,&quot; delivers to the world a unique sound where Congolese roots blend seamlessly with rock, funk, and soul influences. Together with his band, Jupiter &amp; Okwess, he unleashes explosive energy, drawing from the rich musical traditions of his homeland while forging connections between Africa and the world. After captivating international audiences with &quot;Hotel Univers&quot;, &quot;Kin Sonic&quot;, and &quot;Na Kozonga&quot;, the group now presents their fourth album, &quot;Ekoya&quot; (It Will Come). In this opus, Jupiter invites us to reflect: what does &quot;it will come&quot; mean? Is it a premonition of an inevitable destiny or a kind of fatalism? By introducing female voices into his otherwise allmale group — women who are themselves rebels — Jupiter challenges expectations. Is this a deliberate choice or a twist of fate? Is jazz really a male domain? No, of course not! Four top female musicians have now joined forces for a joint tour to emphasise this. Vibraphonist Sasha Berliner, saxophonist Nicole McCabe, bassist Kaisa Mäensivu and drummer Mareike Wiening are in no way inferior to their XY chromosome counterparts. All four are masters of their craft, all four are critically acclaimed, and all four have received numerous awards. While Mareike Wiening holds a professorship for jazz percussion in Vienna and Zurich, her three fellow musicians live and work in the USA and are signed to renowned labels such as Ghost Note Records and JMI Recordings. The extraordinary virtuosity and creativity of this quartet make the concert a musical surprise package! The line-up speaks for itself. In this unique formation, these four top musicians will combine their talents to create a great whole and blur the boundaries between straight ahead and groovy spiritual jazz.

Tome Iliev Quintet

The Macedonian-Swiss-French ensemble is both international and local. Founded in Zurich in 2016, the ensemble first caused a sensation in 2020. At that time, the Tome Iliev Quintet won the audience award at the ZKB Jazz Prize Festival at Moods. A lot has happened since then. Following their success, the group went into the studio to record their second album, Trinaiska, released in 2022 on the Norwegian label AMP Music &amp; Records. Unlike their first album, Sketches of Macedonia (2019), which drew inspiration from Balkan odd meters and lyrical melodies, the second album incorporates the ideas, sensibilities, inspirations, and feelings of all the members to create a unique sound filled with effects, dub elements, rock drums, and open improvisations. They are currently preparing their third album. After performing in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Bulgaria, they are coming full circle at Moods. They have already proven that they can thrill the Moods audience, and they will do so again.

Tillmanns Grosse Band

Till Ostendarp

Tillmann Ostendarp invited his favourite jazz musicians to join him in forming a classic big band brass ensemble featuring two drum kits and a double bass. This is Tillmann&#x27;s big band. He has had larger ensembles before, but never with such momentum. The set includes improvisation, listening, repetition and reading. Tillmann Ostendarp learned to play the trombone in big bands and studied it at the jazz school in Lucerne. However, he then happily put it aside and turned to pop and improvised electronic music on drums and synthesizers. He has also conceived two hybrid projects between free electronic music and baroque string orchestra, and once a year Till gathers around 30 musicians in a band called ‘Alle Sterne’ (All Stars) to develop a programme together over the course of three days. Tillmanns Grosse Band is an attempt to play the sound of his musical beginnings with all the influences he has encountered along the way.

Justina Lee Brown

Justina Lee Brown was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and has established herself internationally as a singer, songwriter and performer. After initial success in the Nigerian Afro-pop scene, she expanded her career in Europe and is now one of the outstanding voices in the genres afro-funk, blues and soul. She received the Swiss Blues Award in 2024 and has been wowing international festivals for years with her energetic stage presence and top band. Highlights of her career include the final of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, a performance in front of 60,000 people at Blues&#x27;n&#x27;Jazz in Rapperswil and support shows for Zucchero. Her music is deeply rooted in West African traditions, but open to global sounds and modern influences. After the albums Black and White Feeling and Lost Child, she presents her most personal work to date with Echoes of Home in 2025 - a powerful reflection on origin, identity and musical home between continents.

Imarhan

The band Imarhan formed around 20 years ago when a group of friends decided to start making music together. This sense of unity is reflected in the band&#x27;s name, which translates as &#x27;those who are close to my heart&#x27;. All of the band members were born in Tamanrasset, a city in southern Algeria where the Tuareg community from northern Mali, known as the Kel Tamashek, ended their exile in the early 1990s after enduring numerous conflicts since the 1960s. The band&#x27;s sound reflects their cultural and generational background, combining dry guitar riffs, pop melodies and pan-African rhythms inspired by traditional Tuareg music, African ballads and the modern pop and rock they grew up with. Thanks to their critically acclaimed albums, Imarhan have become a symbol of the new Tuareg generation, bringing a breath of fresh air to desert blues. They celebrate the stories of today&#x27;s Kel Tamashek people and create a rare symbiosis of old and new by channelling this rich and diverse wave of musical influences. The band continues on this path with their latest album, Essam, released on 15 January 2026. At Moods, they will showcase the timeless treasures of Tamasheq music with a vibrant new energy.

Widely celebrated for her profound artistry, Anupama Bhagwat is one of the foremost exponents of the Imdadkhani gharana. Her musical journey began at a young age, shaped by early training on violin and vocals before the sitar became her lifelong companion. A distinguished disciple of the legendary Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee, she has mastered the nuanced gayaki style—bringing to the sitar a lyrical expressiveness modeled on the human voice. With a performance career spanning continents since 1995, Anupama has graced leading festivals, collaborated with eminent musicians, and received critical acclaim for her emotive depth, scintillating taans, and meditative alaaps. Her playing is often described as a seamless blend of technical brilliance and spiritual sensitivity, drawing listeners into a rich world of melody, introspection, and artistic finesse. She will be accompanied by Manish Madankar, an accomplished tabla player who has performed across India, Europe, China, Singapore, and Russia. A versatile artist, he is equally at home as a soloist and as an accompanist for instrumental, vocal, kathak, and fusion performances. Trained under eminent maestros such as Pandit Sandesh Popatkar and Pandit Yogesh Samsi, he currently teaches tabla in Italy. Together, this duo promises an immersive musical journey through the rich tapestry of Hindustani classical tradition—an evening of melody, rhythm, and artistic dialogue.

Omer Klein is a true musical Swiss Army Knife. Born in Israel in 1982, Klein studied in Boston and New York. His work covers a broad spectrum, from solo piano to big band and from song to symphony orchestra. He composes for his own jazz trio, string quartets, theater, dance, and film. He will perform at Moods with his new sextet, The Poetics. With The Poetics, Klein showcases his diverse talents as a pianist and composer. This group of fearless, masterful musicians comes together to create a colorful blend of keyboards, basses, percussion, and wind instruments. Klein&#x27;s new composition book for The Poetics is full of his signature infectious grooves, catchy melodies, and bold harmonies paired with a fresh approach to arrangement and orchestration. Klein&#x27;s love of Brazilian and African music is particularly evident in The Poetics&#x27;s repertoire.

Bahamadia is an icon of conscious and sophisticated hip-hop. The Philadelphia-born artist established herself as one of the most respected voices in the underground hip-hop scene in the 1990s. In 1996, she released Kollage, a masterful debut album produced by DJ Premier, Beatminerz and others, which is now widely regarded as a genre-defining classic. Her smooth flow, pointed lyrics and instinctive musicianship give each track a rare depth, blending jazz, soul and urban poetry. A close ally of the Gang Starr family, she has collaborated with The Roots, Talib Kweli, Slum Village and Erykah Badu. An authentic visionary, Bahamadia continues to inspire new generations and remind us that hip-hop is all about style, soul and truth. At this concert, her calm, magnetic stage presence will be amplified by a live band and DJ. Bahamadia&#x27;s show lasts 60 minutes.

The album &quot;Moon Trail&quot; by Sarah Buechi, Franz Hellmüller and Rafael Jerjen was celebrated by SRF as &quot;The surprise of the year&quot; and the Zurich jazz critic Manfred Papst headlined an extensive portrait of the singer Sarah Buechi: &quot;She creates music for the future.&quot; The trio&#x27;s music shows that Sarah Buechi has traveled far and wide. For over seven years in total, she was on the road in Bangalore, Dublin, London, Copenhagen, Accra, Paris and New York. She has listened to the world and studied all kinds of music in order to develop songwriting, world and jazz in a highly personal way, whereby the balance between composition and improvisation is central. Journalist Luise Wolf describes the trio perfectly: &quot;A strong common feeling and freedom in dealing with the material are the essences that the trio draws from jazz and folk music as well as other global musical traditions. Virtuosity is never presented for its own sake. Rather, it is the underlying, pulsating energy that enables a freer interplay of references.&quot;

Alexander von Schlippenbach Monk‘s Casino

Monk&#x27;s Casino, the quintet around pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, with Axel Dörner on trumpet, Jan Roder on bass, Rudi Mahall on clarinet and Kasper Tom on drums, was formed in its original line-up in the mid-1990s and set itself the remarkable task of recording Monk&#x27;s complete works in 2004. In 2005, a triple CD was released by Intakt, which had been recorded live in Berlin&#x27;s A-Trane the year before. Monk&#x27;s themes are concise, usually quite short and extremely catchy. Just the right playing material for the musicians of Monk&#x27;s Casino: they hijack the Monk titles and don&#x27;t linger long with the traditional sequence of introducing the theme and extensive solo escapades. They take a much faster and more collective approach, using the original angularity of the compositions to interweave them within the pieces. Monk&#x27;s Casino is often fast and sometimes quite turbulent. Nevertheless, everything is well organized and, at least in this respect, under control. So here we go!
