Dancehall Mood is the monthly reggae and dancehall party at Moods. Like on every first Saturday of the month, the K.O.S crew will make the Moods club cooking with hot riddims. This promises an evening full of dancehall hits and reggae rarities, perfectly tuned to the respective audience and immaculately presented by the K.O.S crew and their guest.

Irreversible Entanglements

The band Irreversible Entaglements was founded in 2015 after a concert against racist police violence. Their music has a clear goal: to make a difference through words and music. Their lyrics are evocative, haunting, angry and address trauma, black identity, feminism, police violence and racist structures. The lyrics are carried by alto saxophone, trumpet, bass and drums, a pulsating web of wildly distorted melodies, rhythms, noises.

The singer and composer from Graubünden has been on stage for 50 years. In recent years, she has become best known in this country for her adaptations of Romansh folk songs. It is almost forgotten that the &quot;Grande Dame of Chanzun Rumantscha&quot; has had a unique musical career. Between 1990 and 2010, she worked in Berlin, Paris, London, NYC and Vienna with an astonishing variety of international jazz greats. With her tour, Corin Curschellas celebrates her 50th stage anniversary with a band of her choice, made up of her former Parisian musical companions: guitarist Noël Akchoté, pianist Benoît Delbecq, drummer Steve Argüelles, accordionist Patricia Draeger and bassist Lukas Traxel.

&quot;This is not a harp.&quot; This is the title of Macella Carboni&#x27;s latest album, as she elicits much more than the usual sounds from her electro-acoustic harp. The concert at Moods is again a tribute to contemporary Italian jazz, as she reinterprets the music of Enrico Pieranunzi. For this special project she has engaged one of the greatest interpreters of his music, clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi, who complements the trio to form a quartet. They are joined by two other pillars of Italian jazz: Paolino Dalla Porta on double bass and Stefano Bagnoli on drums. A trio that enables the harp to overcome the stereotypes associated with its instrument. Together they are in constant role reversal: harp, double bass and drums sometimes merge into a single sound, sometimes into three dialoguing soloists, sometimes into a perfect interplay to emphasize melodies or biting grooves. Band-it enables young bands and musicians to present themselves to a larger audience and a jury under professional conditions. In June, they show their skills at six qualifications throughout the canton of Zurich. Indie rock, German pop, Balkan sound, singer/songwriter, hip hop and punk: since 1989, over 1600 bands from all musical genres have taken part in this Newcomer Band Festival. For many of these young talents, Band-it has been a launch pad to great success, such as Faber, Evelinn Trouble, Pablo Infernal and Sebass. Admission is free. What have almost forgotten Japanese folk songs got to do with a cumbia beat? The answer is Minyo Crusaders! The ten-piece collective reworks traditional Japanese folk songs called Min&#x27;yō with Latin music such as cumbia, Ethiopian jazz, Thai pop, Afro-funk and reggae. The result sounds a little crazy, but is absolutely brilliant in a great way. Minyo Crusaders are the most infectious and hottest global beat party since Buena Vista Social Club. Anyway, the punchy and inventive arrangements breathe new life into the old Japanese min&#x27;yō, which are also traditional workers&#x27; songs.

Last year, Orchestra Baobab, one of Africa&#x27;s greatest bands, celebrated its 50th anniversary. Its story begins in the heart of Dakar&#x27;s medina in Senegal in the late 1960s and stretches around the world and into the 21st century. The group of singers and musicians from all over the continent play a mixture of Afro and Latin American styles, international pop and traditional griot music. After last year&#x27;s sold-out concert, the band returns to Moods this August.

From her hometown of London, singer Summer Pearl is currently taking the music world by storm. Her sound of jazz, soul, hip-hop and dub, is reminiscent of the one of the great Eryka Badu, both powerful and touching at the same time. Summer Pearl herself describes it as &quot;a meditation on my past and a reflection of our present. It is both a personal and political message exploring black and female liberation and love gained and love lost.&quot;

Boubacar Traoré

In the early years of Mali&#x27;s independence, 20-year-old Boubacar Traoré picked up an electric guitar and shaped the sound of the young state. But with the military coup in 1968, his songs were banned from the radio and Traoré had to support his family as a farmer and small trader. In the late 1980s, however, his comeback was abruptly interrupted once again by the death of his wife. Traoré went to Paris and made a living as a construction worker. Finally, in 1990, he re-emerged as a musician and recorded six albums in short intervals. Very soon, Vincent Bucher&#x27;s harmonica became the sonic alter ego of Traoré&#x27;s voice and guitar playing. Since the turn of the millennium at the latest, he has been celebrated as one of the great fathers and ambassadors of modern Mandingo music, combining characteristic playing techniques and ideas from West Africa with the philosophy of the blues from the southern United States.

Pablo Nouvelle and Nativ are two important figures in the Swiss music scene. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of that, they harmonize excellently: repeated collaborations now result in the album Embrace and a first joint tour together with Amos Fankhauser and Matthias Nydegger.

Michael Heitzler's Klezmerband

Michael Heitzler became known as the clarinetist of the group &quot;Kolsimcha&quot;, with which he has traveled the world since the early 90s and led klezmer music to new, modern shores. A few years ago Michael Heitzler formed his own band with the three outstanding musicians Christian Gutfleisch (piano), Michael Chylewski (double bass) and Daniel Schay (drums) to pay homage to the great American and Eastern European bands of the 1920s to 1950s. In addition to stirring pieces, there are beautiful, deep and touching ballads that go straight to the soul. Before the concert, a Klezmer workshop will be held at Galotti. Islandman

Islandman is a fictional character, a musical personality, a dreamer who composes the stories of a non-existent place, born from the musical dreams of Tolga Böyük, a musician and producer living in Istanbul. Islandman performs as a live electro-acoustic trio. Their music can be described as a unique blend of smooth electronic textures and dance beats with spacey live guitars backed by shamanic rhythms. The power of the band comes from the perfect balance between electronic structures and acoustic harmonies: Turkish psychedelica meets African roots music.

Salute to the Sun

Trumpeter Matthew Halsall is a pioneer. With his compositions and his label Godwana Records, he has succeeded in developing jazz and bringing it into the present. In contrast to his London colleagues, who rock the scene with danceable club sounds, Matthew Halsall convinces above all with clear, calm arrangements that leave room for improvisation. On his new album Salute to the Sun, elements of the British jazz scene merge with the inspiring sounds of spiritual jazz by Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders. Added to this are the powerful rhythms of global sound and the futuristic sounds of electronica.

Deeply influenced by Creole music as well as American jazz and folk, Leyla McCalla&#x27;s music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty. Her music vibrates with three centuries of history, yet feels strikingly fresh and unique. Leyla McCalla draws inspiration from her past and present, whether it&#x27;s her Haitian heritage or her adopted home of New Orleans. The bilingual multi-instrumentalist and former member of the Grammy-winning African-American string band, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, has developed a distinctive sound that reflects her roots and her experiences. Her latest album, &quot;Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever,&quot; explores the legacy of Radio Haiti, the first private Creole-language radio station in Haiti, as well as the journalists who risked and lost their lives to be on the air for nearly 50 years. The result is simultaneously a work of radical performance art, historical scholarship, and personal memoir, a sweeping and powerful meditation on family, democracy, and free expression that could not have come at a better time.

WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc)

WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc) were Zambia&#x27;s biggest rock band in the 1970s and were at the forefront of a new genre called zamrock. They fused influences ranging from the Rolling Stones to Black Sabbath to James Brown, and blended them with traditional African rhythms and songs. At the height of their popularity, the band often needed police to keep fans at bay while their lead singer Jagari - whose name is an Africanization of Mick Jagger&#x27;s name - roiled the crowd. As Zambia&#x27;s economy stagnated and the country suffered from the AIDS crisis, WITCH disbanded. Jagari, now the only surviving member of the original lineup, retreated to a life of quasi-anonymity as a university music professor before being wrongfully arrested in Zambia&#x27;s toughest hour. Now a man in his 60s, he spends his time mining gemstones. WITCH didn&#x27;t receive greater attention outside their home country until 2012, when Now Again Records reissued their entire discography. In 2016 Jagari began a collaboration with Dutch musicians Jacco Gardner and Nic Mauskoviç, and together with them WITCH is coming to Moods in November.

Dominique Fils-Aimé

Dominique Fils-Aimé is back with a new album and after several attempts finally plays the Moods stage for the first time. Following her successful trilogy of albums that traced the history of African-American culture and history and even earned her a JUNO for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year in 2020, comes her latest record, &quot;Our Roots Run Deep,&quot; which will be released in September 2023 on Ensoul Records. Inspired by soul icons such as Billie Holiday, Etta James and Nina Simone, the Canadian with Haitian roots tells of the wellspring of her soul and holds the audience with her voice in a soothing sonic embrace.

Rafael Schilt & Antonio Zambrini

The guest for this concert is the exceptional Italian pianist Antonio Zambrini. Zambrini is one of Italy&#x27;s most respected pianists and composers. He has been honoured by artists such as Lee Konitz, Ron Horton, Stefano Bollani and John Law setting his works to music. Schilt and Zambrini share a musical affinity characterised by passion, spontaneity and depth. They have performed together at the prestigious Iseo Jazz Festival. Rafael Schilt has been working with Raphael Walser and Marcio de Sousa for many years, making them a well-rehearsed team.

Yarima Blanco Y Son Latino

Yarima Blanco is an outstanding Tres Cubano player and one of the few outside of Cuba to master this unique three-stringed instrument. With her own septet, Son Latino, she combines various Cuban styles with Latin American influences. Her electrifying performances showcase not only her impressive technique on the tres, but also her powerful voice and charisma. Blanco perfected her skills during several years of study in Cuba and quickly became a sought-after artist, also making waves on the international jazz scene with the orchestra ANACAONA. Pancho Amat, international master of the tres cubanos, describes Blanco&#x27;s talent as exceptional. Before and after the concert DJ Saltho invites you to dance.

James Brandon Lewis

&quot;A saxophonist who embodies and transcends tradition,&quot; wrote the New York Times about James Brandon Lewis. In just over a decade, he has become one of the most celebrated young jazz artists. An artist who has carved out a niche for himself with his unique blend of gospel, blues and R&amp;B with the stirring sax explorations of John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Sonny Rollins. The singer, bandleader and composer, who now lives in Germany, began her music studies in Haifa and completed them in Boston. This night&#x27;s programme is just as international. A battered parlour piano, next to it a simply equipped drum set: that&#x27;s all Hely need. The young Zurich duo of pianist Lucca Fries and drummer Jonas Ruther start their pieces from nowhere and let them end in somewhere. The audience closes its eyes, opens its ears wide and floats away into inner spaces or worlds of thought. With driving rhythms and intoxicating sounds, the two musicians play themselves and their audience into ecstasy. What this acoustic duo creates in terms of sound intensity is extraordinary - and brings joy: anticipation for their new album &quot;Plode&quot;, which will be released in April 2023 on Nik Bärtsch&#x27;s boutique label Ronin Rhythm Records.

Sun Mi Hong Quintet

One of the leading emerging talents on the Amsterdam scene, Korean-born Sun-Mi has made a reputation for her inexhaustible creativity and energy. Her music ranges from moments of pure passion to invigorating catharsis, demanding attention and focused listening. During every performance, her band explores its own boundaries, constantly seeking new ways to make a typical jazz quintet sound decidedly atypical, fresh and unique.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Thomas Gansch

The long-standing and very fruitful partnership between Thomas Gansch and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra will continue this year. In addition to repertoire from the past, there will also be new arrangements written by Ed Partyka especially for this concert, presenting Thomas Gansch as a composer and multi-instrumental soloist, but also as an amiable &#x27;enfant terrible&#x27;. One thing is certain: the wonderful musicians of the ZJO will provide some musical surprises. It is also certain that the band and the audience will experience an unforgettable evening.

Marie Krüttli Trio

The Marie Krüttli Trio impresses, is exciting, colourful and daring. With a mature tone, clear aesthetics and beguiling virtuosity, the Swiss woman manoeuvres herself and her band colleagues through intricate rhythms and interwoven chains of chords. The melodies shimmer groovily, the players appear charming and with a lot of enigmatic wit, always deeply rooted in the European piano tradition and influenced by the sound ideals of Stravinsky and Debussy.

One year after her fifth studio album &quot;Longing Fever&quot; won the &#x27;Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award&#x27;, Evelinn Trouble is back on tour with her band. Evelinn Trouble, known for her creative restlessness, her virtuoso voice and her idiosyncratic songwriting has added an exciting pop work to her discography with &quot;Longing Fever&quot; - a break with her psychedelic era but still unmistakably Trouble. It&#x27;s an exciting album that traverses highs and lows with fervour, ranging from Beatlesque love songs to euphoric melodies buoyed by distorted hip-hop. Unexpectedly, new sounds of string instruments join the otherwise dark sound universe of the singer: a string trio expands the band to the &quot;Evelinn Trouble Orchestra&quot;.

Carebender

Carebender is a Berlin-based vocal group that embraces experimental music, using vocal compositions to play a daring game with beauty and abstract art form. Their first album &quot;What We Talk About&quot; was released in March 2022 on BlauBlauRecords and is described as an acappella moment against anger, the rage that lurks in the stomach and always erupts at the wrong moment. At Moods, Carebender will present these songs to a live audience for the first time.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Claudia Döffinger

German composer and pianist Claudia Döffinger presents her compositions and arrangements together with Australian singer Kristin Berardi with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. Claudia Döffinger&#x27;s love for the sound of big bands is palpable through her fresh approach: she combines experimental sounds with dense chords. In this way, hip-hop, indie and funk merge organically with her works and yet sound entirely new. Claudia Döffinger is the winner of the Downbeat Student Music Award, won 1st prize at the Helsinki Jazz Composition Contest and 3rd prize at the Composition Contest Katowice. In addition to jazz standards and earlier original compositions, music from Kristin Berardi&#x27;s new album &quot;The Light and the Dark&quot; will also be heard in big band arrangements.

This is a first at the Moods Jazzclub. Nowruz, is the celebration of the arrival of spring and the new year according to ancient Persian calendars. Nowruz, meaning «new day», is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. It includes rituals, ceremonies, and cultural events, as well as the enjoyment of a special meal with loved ones. New clothes are worn, visits are made to family and friends, and gifts, especially for children, are exchanged. Celebrated for over 3,000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East, and other regions, it promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation.The Persian trio Aban Ensemble with Mitra Behpoori (Tar, Oud, Vocals), Sara Hasti (Kamancheh, Vocals) and Nora Thiele (Percussion, Daf, Rahmentrommel and Tombak) from Germany and Collectif-Medz-Bazar from Paris will be with us. Look forward to a folk festival of Persian dastgah music and an evening where Armenian, Kurdish, Turkish, Arabic and Persian song traditions meet explosive rhythms and pop elements.

Each musician in this cross-cultural urban-diaspora quintet is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. Their message is one of emancipation and fraternity, their music is imbued with folk traditions, old and new. Singing in their mother tongues (Turkish, Armenian, English and French), they tell the story of an inner home, accustomed to exile, cultural blending, and renewal. Their 4th album, Insanistan, will take you from the mountains of the Lost Land to a place where languages, thoughts, and dreams can live together, retracing the road to hope, courage and the unknown. Created in Paris in 2012, Collectif Medz Bazar has traveled extensively through Europe and performs regularly in North America and in the Middle East. Fervent lovers of gatherings and exchange, at ease with all audiences, Medz Bazar&#x27;s musicians perform with the same enthusiasm in major cities like New York, Diyaberkir, Montreal, Yerevan, and Berlin, as in remote villages reaching from the Cévennes mountains in France to the Munzur valley in Anatolia.

&quot;One of the most exciting and versatile jazz musicians in Hamburg&quot;. With this justification, Silvan Strauss, who comes from Allgäu, won the Hamburg Jazz Prize in 2021. Whether in his own band TOYTOY or as a sideman in bands like Maria João, Omer Klein or Giovanni Weiss, as a guest drummer of the NDR Bigband or in the Lisa Wulff Quartet, in which he has been a permanent member for eight years, Silvan Strauss stands out everywhere. With his Tiktok videos, the young German reaches an audience of millions. Šuma Čovjek dispel the clichés of classic Balkan pop. The Swiss with a migration background sing in French, Croatian and Arabic. The languages flow so harmoniously into each other that you have the feeling you understand them all. This is certainly not least due to the lovingly arranged songs: melancholy ballads, rhythmic pop-rock pieces and rap tracks, peppered with furious brass sections.

Christoph Grab's BLOSSOM

The compositions for BLOSSOM were created in the spring of 2020. Christoph Grab was not looking for these compositions, they came to him in irregular intervals during the first Corona lockdown, mostly unasked - blossoming like flowers spreading hope again after the winter. He later realized that these new compositions had much to do with his moods during the lockdown, so that these pieces unintentionally became a kind of diary of his lockdown period. According to the saxophonist, he couldn&#x27;t get the flower metaphor out of his head, and so the new program is now called &quot;BLOSSOM&quot;. Furthermore, the compositions (which were originally written without names) have also received English flower names, such as &quot;Feverfew&quot;, &quot;Love in the mist&quot;, &quot;Bleeding heart&quot;, &quot;Mad dog skullcap&quot;, &quot;African daisy&quot; or &quot;Johnny jump up&quot;. The music of BLOSSOM means of transportation for stories and emotions, an adventurous music full of warmth, built on friendship and mutual support, for a band that becomes a unit, a breathing organism.

Sarah Chaksad surprises with compositions for a new, 13-member band: the saxophonist and composer, born in Wohlen in 1983, has carefully assembled her wide-awake Large Ensemble with exquisite German, French and Swiss musicians, a Norwegian and a Brazilian. It is a mixture of friends with whom she already works successfully in her other bands and new ones, whom she has chosen as consciously as intuitively clever - and for whom to write, that can be heard well in the music, great desire and a lot of imagination were ideal prerequisites. Both in the line-up and in the composing process, the idea of how the ensemble as a whole should sound and what music could be realized with the instrumental possibilities was central. However, Sarah then wrote the pieces exactly for the excellent musicians of her Large Ensemble and, with flute, tuba and basset horn - the &quot;tenor clarinet&quot; - additionally for instruments that had never belonged to her bands before. The result is again astonishing and, although the composer&#x27;s signature remains clearly audible, differs from earlier projects. The music is more open and - not only on &quot;Lost&quot; - also more risky, without ever losing flow and drive or intensity. Sarah creates with her large ensemble a richness of colors and moods as never before. In addition, she skillfully builds sound spaces within her pieces again and again for individual instruments and combinations, for dialogues and wonderful solos. She makes sophisticated use of the variety and flexibility that the new band offers her. On her musical journey, the bandleader is, figuratively speaking, sometimes traveling by bus, sometimes by tandem - and always with brilliant musicians who, for all their enjoyable, thrilling art, take us together on an adventurous and in the best way entertaining journey.

The earthquake that struck south-eastern Turkey, the Kurdish areas and Syria has left countless people in distress. Our thoughts are with the survivors, friends and relatives of the earthquake victims. We wish everyone much strength and want to help: Therefore, we will collect donations at the concerts and forward them to selected NGOs. Sababa5 is what the Psychedelic Music Explosion series stands for! That is, irregular rhythms, disco grooves, psychedelia, funk and their synthesis with Western pop from the 70s, rediscovered and reinterpreted in the 21st century. Sababa5 play a modern interpretation of Mizrahi music, a genre originally played in Israel by Syrian, Moroccan or Iraqi Jews and includes stylistic elements from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. A mix that is definitely very danceable!

Asmâa Hamzaoui & Bnat Timbouktou

Asmâa Hamzaoui and Bnat Timbouktou (the daughters of Timbuktu) represent a new generation of young women Gnawa performers, breaking new ground in a traditionally patriarchal realm. Asmâa Hamzaoui assimilated the Gnawa musical tradition from a young age through her father, renowned musician Rachid Hamzaoui, learning to play the guembri (three-string lute) from an early age and later accompanying him at celebrations. She formed Bnat Timbuktu in 2012, gradually winning over audiences, until their breakthrough invitation to the Gnaoua Festival of Essaouira in 2017. Their taboo-busting performance, and jamming with Fatoumata Diawara, won them invitations to major festivals in Europe and the USA, even without a recording to their name. Asmâa still comes up against opposition from some Gnawa traditionalists but as she says: “They can talk, but here I am working and they’re just talking.”

Delia Meshlir

Delia Meshlir is a Swiss musician who grew up in Lausanne. Recently, Delia Meshlir, bassist Alex Müler and saxophonist Ilham Moubachir joined forces to record &quot;Calling The Unknown&quot;, Delia Meshlir&#x27;s second album, which is scheduled for release on Irascible Records in March 2022. Her songs are about love, trust and dealing with the passage of time. With her music - laced with pop, psych and indie rock influences like Angel Olsen, Cat Power and PJ Harvey - you are close to her heart and her world. Her voice is gentle and both powerful, leading the audience into this intimate world full of sincere feelings.

Yumi Ito is not only a distinguished musician, but also an independent composer and singer who moves weightlessly and at the same time competently between jazz, art-pop, electronica, free improvisation and neo-classical music, generating a sound that comes across as fresh and often surprising. The musician, composer and arranger with Polish and Japanese roots navigates through the musical fields with concentration and precision, unwaveringly following her own path. Ed Partyka arranges the guest singer&#x27;s compositions for the Zurich Jazz Orchestra and its soloists. The music comes mainly from Yumi Ito&#x27;s critically acclaimed albums &quot;Stardust Crystals&quot; and &quot;Ekual&quot;.

Robben Ford is one of the leading electric guitarists of today and feels at home in many different musical contexts. It so happens that the five-time Grammy nominee has played with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, George Harrison, John Scofield and many others, and can present an equally versatile repertoire. Over the past decades, Robben has released 30 albums as a bandleader and, in addition to his outstanding skills as a guitarist, has developed a highly individual style as a composer and singer. The repertoire for this concert consists of music arranged by Ed Partyka from Robben Ford&#x27;s older albums, but also the latest CDs &quot;Purple House&quot; and &quot;Pure&quot; will be quoted, so to speak.

et . nu

et . nu stands for a volcanic eruption. Hot lava rock. Liquid. Energy. Golden. It also implies being naked, a sensual, or sexual connection to life. Simplicity and honesty: the main ingredients for good art. Et . nu took its beginning on the day they met. On stage at a gig in Paris. A little hungover, slightly sceptical. Hungry, as experienced musicians are when they go on stage with someone new. That night, when Lea opened her mouth and her voice merged with the bass line, it happened. Anyone who was there could attest to it. Something buzzed through the room and hung in the air between the musicians, the audience and between the two of them. Like incense. Almost tangible. Whether it was an energy, a spark or chemistry - it doesn&#x27;t really matter! This something was there, and it was magical! In no time at all, the two woke up together as fresh lovers. A little later they were a permanent couple. The better they got to know each other, the clearer it became that this something, this love, this shared thirst for life, was the music. Because when you&#x27;re really in tune with life, it&#x27;s like a resonance, a vibration on a cellular level. So it made sense to transform this something into sound and record it.

On this evening you will hear unusual sounds in the area of tension between the oddball jazz of a Thelonious Monk and classical Appenzell string music in the style of the Moser family of musicians. The programme title is appropriately &quot;Monk to Moser&quot; and this will be played in the traditional Altfrentsch line-up consisting of violin, dulcimer and double bass. PS: &quot;Altfrentsch&quot;, a term rarely used today in the Appenzell dialect, goes back to the German expression &quot;altfränkisch&quot;. Deriving from the Middle High German &quot;altvrenkisch&quot; (&quot;in the manner of the old Franks&quot;), it means as much as &quot;old-fashioned&quot;, &quot;according to old custom&quot;.
