The quartet of saxophonist Reto Suhner is a formation whose concerts resemble a stay in an unstable weather zone. So when calm sets in, it's better not to sit back and relax: You might just find yourself in the eye of a hurricane. For twenty years Suhner has stuck to the quartet formation with saxophone, piano, double bass and drums. In and of itself, this is instrumentation that is part of the courant normal of jazz, but it also allows for a degree of spontaneity and authenticity that goes far beyond this courant normal. Suhner may not be following a fixed concept, but it can nevertheless be said that his quartet's music is about combining timeless jazz virtues with a subtle form of subversion.
