For over a decade, Swiss composer and alto and soprano saxophonist Sarah Chaksad has been a leading figure on the European jazz scene. Her trademark is her narrative, richly textured musical language, which combines compositional precision with great formal freedom. The international press hails her as an outstanding composer and arranger. Raised in a musical family, Chaksad discovered her passion for the saxophone and composition at an early age. She studied saxophone and music education at the Jazz Institute of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). She gained significant inspiration from international masterclasses and collaborations with musicians such as Guillermo Klein, Maria Schneider, Django Bates, and John Hollenbeck. In 2012, she founded the Sarah Chaksad Orchestra, with which she performed regularly on European stages for ten years and recorded the albums “Windmond” (2016) and “Tabriz” (2019, with Wolfgang Muthspiel). With the internationally cast Sarah Chaksad Large Ensemble, she released the album “Together” in 2023, which was praised by critics for its richness of timbre and musical depth. Chaksad is committed to the further development of the jazz scene. She directed the Jazzcampus Club Basel from 2015 to 2020, has co-led the international development program Focusyear with Wolfgang Muthspiel since 2016, and has been a co-director of the Institute of Jazz at the FHNW since 2025. She also co-founded the booking agency Esteam Music and the label Clap Your Hands.

With various residencies in and around Zurich and his enduring connection to the local scene, he’s stood behind various DJ decks over the past 20 years, whilst continuing to perfect his skills as a selector. Sometimes there are fabulous bands, sometimes there are fabulous musicians. With this unique line-up, both are true, and one can confidently use superlatives. Each one would be worth a visit on their own, but seeing all these legends together on the same stage is probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience and is sure to set jazz fans’ hearts racing. In addition to their own projects as bandleaders, most of them have served as sidemen for greats such as Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Carla Bley, Woody Shaw and Oscar Peterson. Now trumpeter Tolliver, saxophonist Osby, trombonist Eubanks and bassist Känzig are reuniting under the leadership of François Lindemann on piano and Alvin Queen on drums for a special reunion. Together, they pay tribute to the grand masters John Coltrane and Miles Davis, who would have celebrated their 100th birthdays this year. In doing so, they do not play the music of these two giants, but follow their example and approach to inventiveness and creativity. This unique concert by living legends will be a tribute to Davis’s and Coltrane’s aesthetic and to what the two have given to jazz.

The sound of Co Streiff’s quartet is idiosyncratic. Her compositions and the band’s finely woven interplay create a rich, atmospheric soundscape. The British music magazine The Wire was impressed by the coolness of their playing and described the music as &quot;glorious, uncategorisable modern music&quot;. Since its debut at the Unerhört Festival in Zurich in 2009, the quartet has continued to evolve. Since 2019 alone, the group has played over 25 concerts in Switzerland, including at the 2024 Willisau Jazz Festival, and has presented numerous new compositions. Live recordings made during a tour in April 2023 are now due to be released in August 2026 under the title &quot;Oracle&quot; on the renowned label INTAKT Records. The music is carried by four strong musical personalities: the versatile and powerful double bassist Christian Weber; the experimental sound explorer Gerry Hemingway on drums; the exceptionally versatile and expressive trumpeter Russ Johnson; and Co Streiff herself, whose warm, earthy saxophone playing lends the music its unmistakable voice.

Fresh from her critically acclaimed collaboration Clay with Matthew Herbert, Momoko Gill steps forward in her own right for the first time with her remarkable debut solo album. She has long been one of the UK electronic and jazz scene’s best-kept secrets. A self-taught drummer, producer, songwriter, and vocalist, she has brought her unique touch to collaborations with Alabaster DePlume, Matthew Herbert, Coby Sey, Tirzah, and Nadeem Din-Gabisi (her musical foil in An Alien Called Harmony). But, with &quot;Momoko&quot;, she emerges into the spotlight with an album that is entirely her own. Throughout, you can hear the stylistic flavours of jazz musicians as much as singer-songwriters, experimental artists and electronic producers. Though Momoko Gill rejects imitation, sculpting her sound through feel and expression rather than tradition. Based in London and having grown up in Japan and the US, Gill channels her breadth of perspective through her musical ideas and storytelling, with a unique voice developed through instinct, collaboration and solitary study.

Musician Martial In-Albon brings archaic alphorn sounds into the present through his work. This project began when he recorded the &quot;Miniatures&quot; for his album &quot;Alphorn Tunes&quot; (2025) in the Hünenberg water reservoir in the Chnodenwald, where the reverberation lasts for over 45 seconds. He is now bringing this extraordinary music to the stage. An interplay of natural tones, electroacoustic composition, dance and surround sound comes together to create an immersive performance that connects the past with the present. The timelessness of the sounds creates a connection to the moment, the place, the people and the vibrations of the present. The invisible becomes visible and the intangible becomes tangible, all the while in constant contact with the ever-present interplay of space and time.

Bobby Sparks II

Bobby Sparks II is a Grammy Award winning musician and producer steeped in gospel, funk, jazz and blues. He is a key architect behind Snarky Puppy’s signature sound and toured with musical giants including Prince, Marcus Miller, George Benson, Nancy Wilson and Natalie Cole among others. He was also as a core member of Roy Hargrove’s band &quot;The RH Factor&quot;. In a monumental display of his immense musical talent, his latest album &quot;Paranoia&quot; sees Sparks orchestrate a two hour funk opera that masterfully fuses funk, rock, soul, and jazz into a singular, sprawling vision. It is an epic and celebratory sonic journey, brought to life with the help of a stellar lineup of guest musicians, that represents the culmination of his lifelong musical experience. Known for his love for vintage keyboards – from the Hammond B-3, Clavinet and Fender Rhodes to the Mini-Moog and Prophet-5 – Sparks blends analog character with deep pocket funk and electrifying improvisation, making him one of the most versatile and in-demand keyboardists of his generation.

Minyo Crusaders

The Minyo Crusaders are a ten-piece big band from Japan who make no secret of their love for their folk songs (Min’yō). “For the Japanese, Min’yō is the folk music that is both closest to them and yet the furthest away,” says bandleader Katsumi Tanaka. Its essence is deeply rooted within them, even if they do not always realise it. The band reimagines traditional Japanese folk songs by blending them with Latin American, African and Caribbean rhythms. Their powerful and inventive arrangements breathe new life into these traditional working-class folk songs. The fact that this blend is fantastic is evident not only from the fact that the Moods team have been ardent fans since their performance in 2023, but also from renowned artists such as Iggy Pop and Ry Cooder, who described them as “the best band I’ve heard in many years”.

Tim &amp; Puma Mimi are back! The Swiss-Japanese electro duo, known for their techno cucumber, toothpaste flute and Skype concerts, recently even made it into the Hollywood film Ghost in the Shell. After seven years of absence aka raising children aka training interns, another baby is now here: an album with twelve tracks: &quot;More or Less Tim &amp; Puma Mimi&quot;. The play with addition and subtraction runs through the entire album. Many new signature sounds appear: a pocket operator synthesizer that looks like a pocket calculator and sounds like a Gameboy. A vocoder that opened up new possibilities for Mimi&#x27;s unique vocals. Or the KoTaMo, a mix of koto, tambura and monochord - three cultures, three bodies of sound, one instrument. What is striking about the new songs is the (supposed) lack of beats and the even stronger incorporation of Japanese music elements via flute melodies, crickets or folk songs (Aka Tombo, Ryushi), while the unique Tim &amp; Puma-Mimi quirkiness remains at all levels.

The Hillbilly Moon Explosion

Founded in Zurich in the late 1990s, The Hillbilly Moon Explosion is a band that blends rock ’n’ roll with influences from blues, swing, 1960s beat, country, surf and chanson to create a distinctive sound. Thanks to this stylistic diversity, the group has made a name for itself far beyond the rockabilly scene. Although various media outlets have hailed them as one of Switzerland’s finest rockabilly bands, the group is still considered an insider&#x27;s tip. This is partly because they consistently refuse to be pigeonholed into any particular style. Rather than limiting themselves to classic rockabilly patterns, the band incorporates the diverse musical tastes of its members into their sound. This openness is also evident in their latest album, &quot;Back In Time&quot;, which was released in 2024 on Cleopatra Records. Across eleven original compositions and a reggae-inspired rendition of Toussaint McCall’s classic &quot;Nothing Takes the Place of You&quot;, founding members Oliver Baroni and Emanuela Hutter showcase their talents as songwriters. In doing so, the band retains the infectious energy and dynamism that has secured them a loyal fanbase for years.

Until the concert begins at 8:30 p.m., the Paul Amereller Trio will welcome guests with live music. The three Zurich-based musicians—Paul Amereller (drums), Xaver Rüegg (bass), and Leandro Irarragorri (piano)—share a common musical language: improvised, structured, open, and with a keen sense of rhythm and sound. In the trio, these three perspectives come together directly: bass, piano, and drums serve as the starting point for music that emerges in the moment. Dynamic, rhythmically focused, and full of energy—always with room for surprises. Three musicians who don’t simply play together, but listen to one another and develop the music collectively.

Oum first studied architecture before turning to music and becoming a true builder of songs. Her foundations lie in the complex rhythms of Morocco; her structures are melodies of rare sensuality; her voice—both powerful and gentle—is the living material of her art. Even as she draws on the languages of jazz, soul, and North African trance, Oum resists all categorization. Her music belongs to a singular artist—free and universal. A committed voice, she stands for freedom, the rights of women and minorities, and for an ecological and humanistic vision of the world. As a UNAIDS ambassador, she transforms her art into a space of resistance and sharing, where spirituality and poetry rise as vital forces. With Dialddar (“homemade”), Oum makes a radical gesture: composing an album without string or wind instruments, relying solely on voice and percussion. A choice that is both a technical challenge and an artistic manifesto. Most of the percussion instruments were handcrafted in Marrakech. Their tuning, sensitive to fluctuations in temperature and humidity, makes each recording fragile, alive, and constantly evolving. It is precisely this organic dimension that Oum sought to preserve: a music that breathes, that escapes control, and finds its truth in the moment.

Greg Hutchinson is one of the most highly regarded drummers of his generation, known for his deep swing, versatility, and unmistakable feel. Since launching his professional career in the late 1980s, he has performed and recorded with jazz greats including Roy Hargrove, Betty Carter, Joshua Redman, Dianne Reeves, John Scofield, and Ray Brown. Equally fluent in bebop, modern jazz, neo-soul, and hip-hop-infused grooves, Hutchinson has appeared on more than 150 recordings and remains an in-demand collaborator on stages and in studios worldwide. His playing blends tradition with modern innovation, making him a defining rhythmic voice in contemporary music. &quot;Kind of Now – The Pulse of Miles Davis&quot; is Gregory Hutchinson’s bold, soulful reimagining of the rhythmic legacy behind Miles Davis. Rather than revisiting the past during this anniversary year, Hutchinson and his all-star ensemble channel the spirit of innovation and dialogue that defined Miles’ greatest bands. The project moves fluidly between swing, groove, and abstraction – a deep, modern conversation built on the pulse that Miles’ drummers once drove. True Loves

Listening to the abundant sounds of the Seattle-based funk &amp; soul group, True Loves, is like walking down a favorite neighborhood street, slapping five with friends, checking up with clerks in their stores, and smelling the familiar scents of your most cherished locale. The band is its own block party. ‌What began in 2014 as a jam session between three of the city’s best - drummer David McGraw, bassist Bryant Moore, and guitarist Jimmy James - has since blossomed into a global force that features percussionist Iván Galvez, trombonist Greg Kramer, and saxophonists Gordon Brown and Skerik. Together, the group’s live performances have garnered them much acclaim and millions of streams on YouTube. ‌In 2017, True Loves recorded their debut instrumental LP, Famous Last Words, which received worldwide adulation, earning them performances at coveted music festivals. In 2018, the group released the &quot;Dapper Derp/Kabuki&quot; 45&#x27; on WeCoast Records followed by 2019&#x27;s Colemine Records &quot;Famous Last Words/Mary Pop Poppins&quot; 45 single. The band released their sophomore album &quot;Sunday Afternoon&quot; in 2021, on Color Red Music. 2024 saw the band release their latest &quot;Good Weed and Red Wine&quot; followed by their second European tour. A second single, &quot;Dopus No. 1&quot; was released in January 2025 with a vinyl 7&quot; release of both songs on Valentine&#x27;s day.

Root Area plays &quot;soul jazz&quot; in the truest sense. Whether it’s slow blues, New Orleans funk, gospel-inspired ballads, or hot grooves – Root Area’s music is deeply connected to the roots of jazz, bringng them into the present day. Having already released several CDs featuring compositions by all four band members, this Carte Blanche evening sees Root Area focus on new original compositions penned by Elmar Frey. His compositional style is characterized by rhythm, groove, and colorful melodies, which – through the contributions of Nicole Johänntgen, Christoph Grab, and Marcel Thomi – develop into a rich band sound and an incredibly captivating energy.

Singer, songwriter, and producer China Moses develops her art and music in an open and honest way. Her music is defiantly authentic and defies what so many labels and critics want: a label. She captivates her listeners with her deep sense of rhythm, her sensitivity, and her wit, drawing inspiration from countless styles within the vast tradition of African American music. Open and fearless, China’s songs document fleeting emotional states and expansive narratives, often turning to self-reflection in both her lyrics and phrasing. China Moses and Ed Partyka have been collaborating since 2014 and have built a strong artistic connection based on mutual respect and trust. Over the years, Ed has arranged many of China’s original compositions, as well as selected songs from the pop, soul, and gospel repertoires, for jazz orchestra.

«We Dream»

Lakecia Benjamin approaches her music and performances with a take-no-prisoners attitude. After primarily performing as an accompanist for artists such as Alicia Keys, Missy Elliot, Gregory Porter and Theo Croker, she introduced the world to her own voice. While her first two studio albums leaned into jazz-funk and soul, in 2020 she referenced her bebop and spiritual influences with &quot;Pursuance: The Coltranes&quot;, an album that brought together several generations of the genre’s luminaries, including greats such as Marcus Strickland, Brandee Younger, Reginald Workman, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Her 2023 album “Phoenix” is a double metaphor. Lakecia Benjamin refers to the New York City she grew up in and watched slowly die during the pandemic and then come back to life. But it is also a personal reference to the death which she miraculously escapes from in the Fall of 2021 following a serious car accident. This new opus is also an opportunity to highlight her own compositions as well as the creativity, talent and commitment of the female artists she surrounds herself with. “Phoenix”, which earned her three Grammy nominations, marks yet another stratospheric rise for an artist who resolutely knows what she wants to say and how to say it, all the while honoring her mentors and the traditions that have come before her. Her newest album, &quot;We Dream&quot; was released early June 2026 on Artwork Records (PiAS).

Mario Lucio is a singer, guitarist, composer, poet, author, thinker, and former Minister of Culture of Cape Verde. As a visionary artist and dedicated advocate of creolization, he brings together African, European, and diasporic influences in his work. His music is a tribute to the cultural diversity that shapes Cape Verdean identity. With his latest album, Independance, Mario Lucio reflects on the profound transformations that Cape Verdean music underwent following the country’s independence in 1975. Traditional forms of expression such as Batuko, Tabanka, and Funaná, long suppressed, returned to the stage and became symbols of cultural self-determination. Together with the Pan African Band, whose members represent four African nations, he celebrates the 50th anniversary of the independence of the former Portuguese colonies and the cultural renaissance of Lusophone Africa. Independance combines personal memories with a pan-African vision. The German-Romanian double bassist and composer Robert Lucaciu (1988) deconstructs his own (cis-)male self-understanding in his latest project Fallen Crooner and invites musicians Laura Totenhagen, Pascal Klewer, Shannon Barnett, Sofía Salvo, and Moritz Baumgärtner to engage in a joyful discourse on gender roles. In a montage of Lucaciu&#x27;s original compositions, well-known songs, and text sequences from various authors, free improvisation plays a central role—questioning the moment with an open outcome. This creates a musical discussion whose strength lies in living the questions in all their intensity and dissolving the urgency for quick answers with a sense of goodwill. She gained international attention in 2019 with her debut album &quot;The Oracle&quot;, which she recorded using only her mobile phone. This critically acclaimed work propelled her to meteoric fame. Dawid tours the world with her ensemble, Tha Brothahood, and released the highly acclaimed album &quot;LIVE&quot; in 2020, which received praise from NPR and Pitchfork, among others. She also leads the all-female group Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty and is involved in numerous avant-garde projects in Chicago. She has collaborated with artists such as Damon Locks, Ben LaMar Gay and Roscoe Mitchell. Whether performing solo or with an ensemble, her concerts are intense, spiritual experiences that foster a sense of community, remembrance and transcendence. Damir Imamović is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of the contemporary sevdah scene in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They yodel to lure the fairies out of the bushes and stomp their feet to scare the snakes away from the Madrisa Alp. High D seeks out archaic energies that have fallen into oblivion. Swiss myths and legends are the first landmarks on the young duo’s musical journey. Through their music, they transport listeners to the settings of legends throughout the Alpine region, from the caves of Vallorbe to the basilisk of Basel and the Hölloch caves in the Muota Valley in Schwyz. Lucas and Luca interweave showers of sound and &#x27;Jützli&#x27;, clouds of guitar and synth drones. Raw soundscapes capture the emotions of the stories, while lyrics in dialect convey their narratives and moral questions. Composition meets improvisation, navigating the space between archaic ritual, noise, folk music and experimental sound exploration. The finalists in the solo category will be accompanied by a first-class combo made up of MKZ teachers.

Nana Benz du Togo

Under the name Nana-Benz (“The Mothers with the Benz”), a group of Togolese women became well known from the 1980s onward. As traders of printed textiles, they were so successful that they “turned their country into a hub of the textile trade in West Africa.” They symbolized the economic, social, and political status they gained through this success by purchasing luxury vehicles, primarily of the Mercedes-Benz brand. They are regarded as the first female millionaires on the African continent. To this day, the vehicles are passed down from the mothers to their daughters. The band plays music that is built for the dance floor, fusing Voodoo tradition with soul. There are five of them, like the fingers of one hand. A hand ready to form a fist and strike with power, or gently caress the earth with groove and grace. Nana Benz du Togo channels an organic sound steeped in sub-bass and layered with complex polyrhythms, creating a hypnotic foundation for the voices of three electrifying electro-soul preachers. Their message remains centred on feminist and environmental themes sung in harmony with the scales of the Togolese voodoo tradition. Armed with nothing more than their voices and a vintage Korg keyboard, this powerful ensemble crafts a sound that is both raw and transcendent. Their live shows are nothing short of spiritual – a blend of ancestral energy and modern fire that has left thousands in a trance across European stages.

Marina Mello

Marina Mello’s final carte blanche evening will be a unique and rare opportunity to experience an evening at Moods dedicated entirely to the harp. The program features two solo performances: one by Rhodri Davies and the other by Marina Mello. While sharing a deep passion for the instrument and a similar approach to it, both artists have developed their own distinctive and personal ways of exploring the harp, from their choice of harp type to their use of extended techniques and electronics. Rhodri Davies is a Welsh harpist, improviser, composer and multidisciplinary artist. His possibilities for exploring the concept of the harp” seem almost endless, whether it’s the classical harp, the Bray harp, the horsehair harp, or the electric harp; installations involving wind, water, ice, or fire; or experimentation with preparations and detunings. It is therefore no coincidence that Davies is considered one of the most prominent members of the London School of Reductionist Improvised Music.

Marina Mello is a Brazilian harpist living in Zurich. Building on her classical training, she has developed a unique approach to the harp and its almost infinite playing possibilities. Focusing on unconventional playing styles such as extended techniques, string preparation and the use of effects pedals, she has transforms the gentle-sounding instrument into a powerful machine. In September 2025, her debut solo album Deságua was released on the Peruvian label Buh Records.

Although he’s actually from Melbourne, Don Glori is one of the up-and-coming new voices on the London jazz scene. Like London, the Australian metropolis is considered a musical melting pot and has produced renowned jazz groups such as Hiatus Kaiyote, 30/70 and Mildlife. Influenced by this melting pot, Don Glori’s music blends elements of jazz, funk, soul, R&amp;B and samba to create a unique sound that shimmers with a golden glow. One thing that is unmistakable, however, is the joy of playing that runs through all of his music. In 2023, he moved to London and released his latest two albums &quot;Don’t Forget to Have Fun&quot; in 2024 and &quot;Paper Can’t Wrap Fire&quot; in 2025. Since then, he has performed on numerous stages, including Jassmine, Ronnie Scott’s, and We Out Here. It’s high time, then, for a visit to Moods.

For 25 years, Gregor Müller (piano), Herbert Kramis (double bass) and Pius Baschnagel (drums) have been playing together in the same line-up. Their long-standing collaboration has fostered a close friendship – and a musical dialogue that, to this day, thrives on openness, trust and the joy of discovering new things together. The trio’s music consists almost exclusively of their own compositions. The fact that all three musicians compose has a decisive influence on their sound. The pieces bear different stylistic signatures – lyrical jazz meets classical timbres, Latin American influences, odd metres, groovy passages and atmospheric ballads. The differences remain audible and, through their interplay, coalesce into a shared language. Composition and improvisation are in constant dialogue. The music evolves in the moment, thriving on attentive listening and a willingness to share ideas, pick them up and develop them further together. In this way, every concert evening remains open to new directions. Four Album recordings – most recently *Mirror*, and before that *Oleaje* – trace the trio’s journey. Their true home, however, remains the stage: there, familiar compositions are constantly transformed into new musical stories. Over the decades, the band&#x27;s most important composers and arrangers have included Thad Jones himself, as well as legendary figures such as Bob Brookmeyer, Michael Abene and Jim McNeely. This pioneering group of musicians inspires everyone around the world who composes for or performs with big bands. For fans, visiting the Village Vanguard at 178 Seventh Avenue South (corner of Waverly Place) in Greenwich Village on a Monday evening is just as essential as visiting Times Square during a trip to New York. The roots of her music trace back to the traditional songs of the Luo people, with which she grew up in Kenya. She has lived in Switzerland for many years and is active here not only as a musician but also as a visual artist and as the founder and president of HOFOGI, a charity supporting young women in Kenya.

And so are the Swingin&#x27; Christmas concerts by Raphael Jost and his band, which have been a firm fixture of the festive season for many people for over 10 years and ensure sold-out halls. Raphael Jost is that rarest of birds, the British saxophonist Will Vinson, who lives in New York, once said. A singer and songwriter with a great voice and at the same time a pianist whose skills enable him to share the stage with the best. Jost, who has already won the Swiss Jazz Award for his debut album, sees himself as a modern crooner. He leads through the evening with humor and without too much kitsch. Swinging classics such as Let It Snow and Winter Wonderland are joined by his own songs, JingleBells gets a pinch of Brad Mehldau and Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer becomes a sleigh ride to New Orleans. The program leaves plenty of room for solos and at the same time impresses with sophisticated and original arrangements. Singer Stefanie Suhner combines jazz and soul in her magnificent voice and has already toured with Udo Jürgens and Pepe Lienhard, among others. The horn section features the two outstanding soloists Bastien Rieser on trumpet and Christoph Grab on tenor sax. Jost&#x27;s long-time companion Raphael Walser on double bass and the renowned drummer Elmar Frey form the rhythm section. The six musicians are united by their irrepressible joy of playing and their love of the jazz tradition. Tania Giannouli, classically trained and skilled in experimental playing techniques, explores the sonic spectrum of the grand piano with great sensitivity – from subtle resonances to unusual textures. Molvær expands this soundscape with trumpet, breath, space and electronics, which have been a central element of his work since his groundbreaking album &quot;Khmer&quot;. Erika Stucky is best known as a singer, composer and performer. With her unmistakable voice and radical stage presence, she has moved between jazz, the American folk tradition, experimental music and Alpine yodelling since the mid-1980s. Having performed more than five thousand concerts on every continent, she has become one of the most extraordinary figures on the international music scene. Shaped by her childhood spent between San Francisco and Valais, Stucky has always combined seemingly contrasting elements, such as yodelling, blues, jazz, rock and performance art. Her unique stage format, which lies somewhere between &quot;story-singing&quot; and &quot;song-telling&quot;, offers intimate insights into her eventful artistic life while celebrating the unbridled power of her music. On stage, she synchronises images and films with songs, life stories and touring anecdotes. Memories meet improvisation and archives merge with the present. She is joined by her long-standing collaborators: percussionist Lucas Niggli and guitarist Oli Hartung. This is an evening that blends a concert, a performance and a road movie.
